I have a 1996 F250 PSD and the A/C is not working. I use my truck primarily to pull my boat and last month when I took it out, the A/C was working great. Today I went to hook up my boat for this weekend and the A/C was blowing HOT air. The A/C clutch would not engage, so I checked the A/C clutch fuse and it was fine. I tried jumpering the pressure switch and still nothing. I cleaned the electrical connectors, even though they looked fine, and still nothing. I'm lost, any ideas???? Oh, I even tried the thinner washer behind the clutch plate, and nothing. Any help would be appreciated.
It could be that you are low on freon, but if you have jumped out the pressure switches and it still won't run, you may just need to remove a washer from the A/C Clutch. The air gap in the clutch may be set too wide for the magnet to pull the clutch in.
If you jumped that switch and nothing then it's an electrical problem, Not the clutch. Unless it is slipping which is hard to do even with too many shims on it. With the engine running check for power on one side of the LP switch. If it's good then plug it back in and check for power on the clutch connector. I've had mice chew through the LP switch wires before on mine. Diagnose why no power on the LP switch first since that is what allows power to the clutch.
Don't just take shims out of the clutch again. You need to set it with a feeler gauge to the right gap. It will not last very long if the gap is too close.
Well, thanks for all the suggestions. I tried adding freon this morning and I think my problems are more severe than I anticipated. Once the freon was added the clutch tried to engage, but it just started squealing and smoking, before I got the truck shut off. I checked the pressure and was at about 45 lbs., so I tried it one more time and this time it started squealing again and then pitched the bolt that holds the clutch plate to the clutch. It looks like I have a fried compressor.
I don't understand this because less than a month ago it was working great. Now that it ungodly hot, the thing decides to stop working. Well, I guess I get to take the boat by myself and have the rest of the family follow in a nice cool car. This is not going to be enjoyable.
