chances are very good that its not the gage itself if it still doesnt work after trying other ones. one way to test the gage is to trace the wire going from the tank to the gage and ground it with the key on. if the gage works then the needle should swing all the way full. it could be a bad connection back by the tank or a faulty in-tank sensor.
Sorry, I don't really know how to fix that, but I did have the same problems on my 76 F-150 4x4, then I went through a creek and high centered it on my tranny, don't know what happened, but it fixed my gas gauge, although the new tranny beat my wallet.
[font size="1" color="#FF0000"]LAST EDITED ON 12-Mar-01 AT 06:34 PM (EST)[/font][p] Check the resistor on the back of the dash panel. It knocks it down to 6v. Check the sending unit with an ohm meter. Check the wire with the ohm meter.Make sure both sides of the fuse is hot.
