On my 77 F-100 w/ 302, the harmonic balancer and pully assembly fell off while I was going down the road. I found the balancer and pully, but what else is there?
Should there be a bolt and washer to hold it on?
I was thinking of going to a junkyard and trying to get a bolt and possibly the HB and pully too, b/c my got a little chewed up when it hit the road, so is there a special way to get it on and off?
Yes There is a special bolt, washer, and there should also be a woodruff key on the crank-shaft. If the balancer and pulley are damaged you really should replace them. I recently replaced my balancer with a summit brand balancer, because my isolation rubber ring on my balancer was severly cracked. Jegs and Summit sell the bolt and washer for the harmonic balancer. Once you replace the bolt amd washer it needs to be torqued to about 160 ft-lbs I believe.
Thanks for the help, I went to the junkyard today, and got a harmonic balancer w/ pulleys, and bolt. I didn't notice it had a washer while I was pulling it out....
How could you tell if the woodruff key is messed up?
Usually there is a thick 1/4" thick washer (Ford p/n-6378 in 1977 Shop Manual) that goes under the harmonic balancer bolt. As long as your woodruff key is still on your crank and it is not all banged up it should be OK. Its purpose is to keep the Harmonic balancer in the proper alignment, so as you first start the balancer back on the crank and you have engauged the woodruff key you should not be able to turn the balancer much left or right.
