I have AutoMeter Sport Comp gauges and my pyrometer has been acting up on me. I called AutoMeter and the fellow told me to disconnect the thermocoupler from the gauge, and when you put power to the gauge(turn the key on) it should go to ~32*; that'll tell me whether the gauge is still good or not. I did that and that's what happened so I ordered a new coupler and it's on its way. Now I'm driving without the coupler and the gauge has been going irractic with the needle bouncing all over. I'll be calling AutoMeter again tomorrow but just wondering if anybody has seen this before and if I'll need to order a new gauge as well?
I need this done before next week since I'll be traveling to Texas pulling a trailer.
Thanks for any help.
Perhaps the guage has been acting irradically because you have no thermocoupler, sort of important when it comes to your temp readings...?? Is it reading hot, too? Does it stay in one position or just bounce around when you hit a bump in the truck?
I have not had any problems with my Hypermax...So I'm not speaking from any real experience here...just a thought.
I'm not sure if not having a coupler would cause it to flutter or not, I'm not familiar with the gauges well enough. It had been fluttering while the coupler was still hooked up. I removed it to try and find a new one to match, drove it today without the coupler and the gauge was still bouncing around. Sometimes it does it sometimes it sits still.
My gauges (pyro, tranny temp and boost) have been working flawlessly for 3+ years, I don't have any complaints. Just hope I can get it fixed soon.
Since the gauge is acting goofy with the thermocouple removed, I'd check the ground for it. Even if it looks good, grounding it straight to the negative post with a jumper wire and running it that way might reveal that the ground is bad...
I had the same problem 6 weeks ago. The gauge pinned below 0 suddenly. I disconnected the probe, and it returned to zero. Then turned the truck on, shorted the probe posts, and it read ambient air temp. Here's my thread, Cookie88 had the test steps posted there.... for whatever it's worth. I'm having a terrible time trying to contact Autometer about replacing the thermocouple, left 3 messages and one email, still no answer.
Thanks for the input fellas. I'll change the ground, as I'm pretty sure I have it grounded with a few other things. Then I'll have to sit and wait till the new coupler comes in.
Thanks again for the help, quick responses as always.
