MAF check list

Ok im looking for a list of what I need to run the MAF....I have the sensor the Y and the airbox lid. I will get a A9L ecu....so do I just need a 5.0 harness? Its a 5.8 by the way and I know it needs to be reconfigured.....

A MAF harness would make things a little easier, but it's doable with the stock 5.8 stuff, just a little more wiring.

I believe that computer expects 2 oxygen sensors, one on each side of the exhaust system. If you have only one O2 sensor, then the location won't work for either one of them.

The speed density harness of course has no plug for the MAF sensor. In addition to repinning the connector and rewiring the injectors, you'll need to get ahold of a plug and add some new wiring in.

Where on earth did you get that "Y"? I've been wanting to do this for awhile, but that crazy "Y" has not been easy to find.

sell what you have on ebay, and get the ford racing maf conversion...just put in the new a3m computer, plug in the jumper harness(with your new numbered injector harness and your mass air plug) and plug in your origional harness to the jumper harness. 45 min job tops! good luck...

if you stick with the route your going...just splice the two o2 sensor wires into one. your computer will think its getting an identical reading from two sensors..when its just recieveing the same s.h.i.t. from one......

Wow ok.....so If I get a 5.0 mustang MAF harness, I can plug it in and its good right? I know you have to swap two of the injector wires but im not sure which.

I have no idea what the A3M computer is, but I dont want to spend 650-700 on MAF, if im going to spend that kind of money on EFI I would stay speed density and use a stand alone. I came accross this stuff dirt cheap so thats why I decided to go with it. I just am not sure what else I need to make it work....I asume its sorting out the harness but I dont remember the trick and I cant find the article on here that explained it. I do know that you can convert a mustang setup to 5.8 but you have to alter the harness and get the ECU tuned to work with the 5.8

As far as the O2 sensor is concerned, will that really work? splicing two into one? Thats a good Idea. I am no longer in the mood to comply with california emmisions so if that screws me up i really dont care.

You would actually be splitting the one O2 sensor output into the two computer inputs. You still have the E4OD, correct? Do as much searching on the internet as you can about this swap. Wiring it yourself can be tricky, so be sure you know exactly what to do and where to swap pins before you get things torn apart past the point of getting it back together. The mustang harness will not be a direct plug-in swap, but you can use the injector wiring to update the truck harness to sequential injection and you can use the MAF wires to add in the MAF sensor to your current harness. You should not have to alter the firing order at all because the 5.8 and the 5.0 HO use the same firing order.

I have probably linked to this before, but read through this again to understand exactly what changes in wiring need to be done for this swap: http://bjoern.brembs.net/cars/maf_conversion/

There is a lot of extra things done on the truck featured on that site that are not necessary for a mass air conversion, such as the throttle body and new injectors, etc. The wiring is spot-on and the process is pretty well detailed.

Cool, I will either dump the E40D or get a Trans controller. So since I wont be doing any mods so the trans will work.....that means I still have to swap out harnesses? In other words I wont be able to use the mustang harness in place of the current one? Or is that only because of the transmission controls?

Controlling the E4OD is going to be an expensive problem. So is replacing the E4OD.
The harness isn't the problem. The Mustang was not released with an electronically shifted transmission so the computer has no ability to provide the electronic shifter signals to make the tranny shift up and down.

I gotta ask again- where the heck did you get that intake "Y"??

oh I was on ebay friday and I saw it and made an impulse buy......so I guess im going MAF now....never drink and shop ebay. Well this whole thing is expensive either way i go...so I have to just descide which way i want to do it. So I can either get an AOD or get a trans controller. The only other way for me to go is stand alone efi and still be in the same situation with the trans so.....since i made this buy I guess ill go ahead and do the MAF.

the a3m1 pcm is the compter that ford racing sends with their kit. its the same as an a9l or a9p...(89-93 mustang). ive read before that you can get a stand alone computer to control the e4od and piggy back it to your engine computer....but im with you on swapping to an aod....good luck

Egoman, you'll still have to modify the harness to make the pinout match the mustang computer, and to add the additional wires needed for sequential injection and MAF.

Dannym, I got the intake 'y' from the dealer, but I'll warn you, it is expensive. If you can find one in a junkyard or on ebay, you will probably come out way ahead. Any '96 V8 F150 would have one, and a select few 94 and 95's as well, but don't hold your breath on those earlier models.

Bauman...thats my controller....lol

Ok so is ther a definate guide to wiring th eharness..for what im doing...? Im not going to wire in the E40d with the ECU....just waht to make sure that if I grab the Mustang efi harness I know what i have to do to make it work. This way we all have a definate guide to what were going to do in the MAf swap. Im not going to do the piggy back ECU thing just going all out A9L so What do I pay attention to and what do I ignore in the wiring process?
