Well I hate to say it, but I used to work of AOL about 8 years ago in Tech Support. The dept that handles cancelations is called "Saves". That was a section i would never want to be in. They are required to keep a certian persentage of people from canceling their accounts. They will go to great lengths to keep you from canceling, but that guy defently crossed the line. Easest way to cancel is to call techsupport untill you get one of them to cancel your account without them trying to transfer you.
After 1 1/2 hours on the phone one morning ( 1/ 1/4 I spent on hold.. not kidding) and being transferred to 4 different countries I hung up, called the bank and cancelled all AOL transactions. AOL will only let you sing up via electronic payment so I cut them off at the source. Next time they tried billing me they found out I cancelled, when they sent me a letter I sent them a letter, along with the IL Attorney General's number and of course i said I cc'd them on this same letter.
Basically the letter I sent told them to kiss my *** and if they wanted to send a bill collector I'd send them with the $28.xx in lead they'd have to pick out of their ***. Tey sent me another letter later saying they were going to turn me over to a bill collection agency and never heard another thing from them (3 years ago). I tried cancelling because I coudl get free dial up from my employer and the only reason I was using AOL was because I had 6 months free with the purchase of my Dell. 2 of that 6 months free I was being billed for so i figure they still owe me at least one months refund. *******s!!
Yep, been there, done that. Let's see what AOL Customer Service has to say about canceling an account. An experiment - an email I sent off to AOL...
Hello,
I am currently a user of 'free' internet service [not really]. I was cosidering signing up for AOL [not really], but have recently been made aware of a cancellation 'issue' with one of your previous customers (a Mr. Vincent Farrari). This customer had a VERY difficult time canceling his account. If I do decide to join, and decide down the road I would like to cancel, will it be this difficult for me?
Thanks,
Concerned 'possibly future' AOL user
I will post the response (if I get one).
Well, four days and still no response, but did any of us really think I'd get one?

That's the same crap I had to endure when I tried getting rid of one of their free offers from about 4 years ago. They said that they never cancelled my account, even though I specifically told them NOT to renew me after the trial period ended, because they were still detecting activity on my account. The so called "activity" was me using their FREE AOL instant messenger. Or at least that's how it was explained to me. I just told them to take me to court if they thought the charges were actually legit or not, forget the collections BS. I never received another letter from them after that.
Heres a guy who taped his AOL conversation. trying like heck to cancle. http://www.filecabi.net/phun/file/cancelaol/wmv
I feel for all who have AOL and want to be rid of the money grubbing monster! I understand they want to keep a client but if a client says I want to cancle then let them! especialy if they are adiment. I used AOL before I knew better and tried to cancel. I ended up calling my credit card company and banning their transactions. My major pev was if I was at work and my other half would be online on her screen name and I couldn't access my account. They didn't want to accept this as a plausable reason and stated it was a security feature. Only thing it secures is they get money and keeping server traffic down.
