I first heard of it yesterday on WLS-AM out of Chicago yesterday, but apparently, when Mr. Ferrari first posted it on his own blog, it shut him down and several other sites that had picked it up.
It's just more confirmation that AOL is...wait, this is a family site...
Enjoy.

Yep, been there, done that. Let's see what AOL Customer Service has to say about canceling an account. An experiment - an email I sent off to AOL...
Hello,
I am currently a user of 'free' internet service [not really]. I was cosidering signing up for AOL [not really], but have recently been made aware of a cancellation 'issue' with one of your previous customers (a Mr. Vincent Farrari). This customer had a VERY difficult time canceling his account. If I do decide to join, and decide down the road I would like to cancel, will it be this difficult for me?
We went through that when we left AOL. Not quite to that extent, but I felt as though I was in the mafia and trying to get out!
We called and they gave us a couple free months. Then we tried again and they did everything they could to keep us as customers. They even tried to scare us by saying our new provider didn't offer the protection that AOL does. We finally wrote a letter to them (not an email, which would have made sense...A letter!) telling them to cancel our account. I had a co-worker tell me that AOL is really like a virus and it attaches itself throughout your computer. It must be true, every once in a while I turn on the 'puter and some AOL thing pops up. Does any body know of any anti-AOL software?

It changes a few DLLs, that it does not change back when it is uninstalled, along with the proxy settings, as far as I can tell.
You will not see it mentioned anywhere in print, but, AOL started from Q-Link, a Commodore computer network. It is where Steve made all the money to start AOL. The funny thing is the underlying server software is still based on the Commodore structure from 20 years ago. That's progress
The fact that one or two companies are monopolizing the high-speed internet access should be our biggest worry. I can get high speed thru one source right now, I have no other choice. Fortunately, another company is installing fiber optics in my neighborhood soon, and I'll have an option.
AOL is trying to compete and stay alive as an ISP, I guess they will go down fighting, or somehow survive. I will give them credit for at least trying. I'm surprised the AOL salesman didn't have a foreign accent.
I just saw this story on HNN and about spat my orange juice all over the T.V when they read the apology letter from AOL stating that his experience was an "aberration" and is not the "norm". I immediately thought that there might be a few FTE'ers that would disagree.
