Well the most disirable of the stock 460 heads are the C8.C9, and the infamuos D0VE-C heads..Made in 68,69 and 70....

And then there are the D1 and up thru the 70's, Go to the 460Ford.com site..and ask the gang in there, Like C. Evans or "The Mad Porter" Scott J and there's a host of others that can help you out.... I know that Scott J can port a set of Iron C heads to flow as well as some out of the box Aluminum heads...

Anyway both are real nice guys to deal with..Just tell em RapidRuss in VA sent ya!! Tell em I said Hi!! LOL

Hope this helps ....

There were no DOVE heads made in 68 or 69...The D O part of the casting number stands for 1970..obviously there were produced from 1970!

If you have a 460, the only performance 460 heads were 1973/74 Police intercepter heads!

Otherwise the DOVE heads that people speak of are 429CJ heads.

The D0VE heads are not CJ heads. They're basically the same heads as the C8 and C9VE heads. All have smaller combustion chambers than the later heads plus screw in studs. I think some are confusing the 1970 429/460 heads with the company called "Dove" when refering to the D0VE head. The 429CJ heads are D0OE castings.

DOVE is just a year... while C8 and C9's may be the same as DO's...They never made DO's in 68/69 as you stated!

Correction: C9VE heads ARE CJ heads..., That makes us both wrong!
Actually I was thinking about Blocks, the DOVE block casting is the 429CJ

429CJ Heads: DOOE-R/C9VE-A/DOAE-H

fomocofan,

When Russ said that the D0VE head was the "same" as the C8, head, I don't think he was trying to say that the D0VE was around in 68/69. I think he was referring to the basic architecture & layout (port size, combustion camber size, valve size, etc.) of the two above mentioned "basic" passenger car heads.

Some basic 460 head info found on the 460ford site:

C8, D0VE: Passenger car heads. All have the same basic sized ports, closed chamber quench design, combustion chamber volume, valve size. And while some small differences between the three mentioned heads might be found, they are close enough to being the same that with milling, any minor differences in chamber volume can be easily equalized so they can be mixed on the same motor with no problems.

D00E-R: CJ head. Closed chamber quench design, bigger intake & exhaust ports, bigger valves.

D2OE: Police Intercepter head. Closed chamber quench design, intake port much like the C8, D0VE heads, and the exhaust port like the CJ head.

D2VE: The one early 460 head that is of little use in a performance application. They are an open chamber design head that can be detonation prone because of no quench pad area like that seen on the other mentioned closed chamber heads.

D3: Closed chamber quench design, but a little more volume than the C8, D0VE heads. Intake & exhaust ports much like the C8, D0VE heads, except the D3's exhaust port floor short turn is a little higher. They are said to be a good choice for someone looking for a factory head that flows close to the same numbers as the C8, D0VE heads, but at a lower compression number to better tolerate crap pump gas.

While the "C9VE" number you mentioned might be used for a CJ head (like the "D00E-R" number is), I think some have said that the C9 prefix can also be seen on the pasinger car head too (not sure though). Edit: found a few posts that reference the C9VE-A head as a regular passenger car head, so I guess that is something that could need more investigation.

The site also has some links to good info on the later year F.I. 460 heads too.

I know the heads are basically the same...But he didn't say that...His post said that DOVE-C heads were made in 68/69/70...I was correcting that info!
He later corrected himself...all is good now!

Everyone makes mistakes, we just dont need comments from the penut gallery when someone makes a small era...I just like to see that the correct info comes out eventually...in case some really needs to know..
It is becoming harder and harder to hard correct info on some of these motors...
