i got 302 built 0n a 1980 block 72 intake , put carb fuel pump filter and still act like its starving for gas??? runs but soon as i get on it itputters &quits takes starting fluid to recrank very disgusted...
I wish you wouldn't use starting fluid in your engine, it is a gasoline engine and you stated that it will run on gas. It sounds like from your description that you are not getting gas out of the tank to the engine. The fuel pump may not be delivering, the pickup in the tank could be stopped up, a fuel filter could be stopped up. It will take some trouble shooting to figure it out, but I bet you can.
JW,
You said you replaced the fuel filter(s)? Sounds like you might have a clogged fuel filter. I've had vehicles do exactly as you describe when the filter was clogged. I also chose to put a 2nd inline fuel filter on my '71 F100, up near the carb. I don't seem to get as much sediment in the carb now. I don't know how it used to get past the orig filter, but it did.
The other common thing it could be, as mentioned, is the fuel pump. Can't assume that the ?new? fuel pump is good. If it's the mechanical diaphragm type, when they get a hole in the diaphragm, they pump enough for low speeds, but not for lettin' the hammer down. You could check the pressure on it if you have a fuel pump guage, or you can do a flow test.
Don't know if the carb you mentioned was new / used. Either way, the float level could be off, so that when the engine is at hi RPM, the bowl basically runs dry. I'd check the fuel pump first.
Either way, BE CAUTIOUS! It's best to do work on the fuel system OUTSIDE. And be very careful with lights that could break while there's gas fumes floating around (ask me how I know). And, have a fire extinguisher and a plan if something does catch fire. Good luck!
Consistently dirty fuel or particles might mean rusting inside the gas tank, especially if the vehicle has had long sitting times with a partially-filled tank. I just replaced mine from LMC, for about $200.
I've had a problem like that and it was the eccentric cam. The tab was broken off. It would pump at idle and when i gave it gas it would stall. When i found the problem i then capped the manuel pump and put a electric one on after an expensive problem.
You didn't say what carb you have on it, or what condition it is in. Could be the float is set wrong, bad accelerator pump, a stuck needle and seat, or just a carb that needs to be taken apart, cleaned and kitted. Might want to get a fuel pressure gauge and check your fuel pressure at the carb
