Hi. I have a 87 ranger 4 x4 that won't start. Sat for over a year got it running gave it a complete tune up and new low volume fuel pump, filter and fuel relay. And replaced the EEC relay. Started up and ran very nice. Checked the time, right on. I shut it off and started a few times just making minor ajustments.
Then I went to start it , Nothing. I have no power at the fuel pump in the tank.I have power at the yellow wire on the relay at all times and power on the red wire with key on. I also only have power on the red wire on the EEC relay when the key is on and nothing else. I have cleaned all grounds. I can not seem to get any power at the inertia switch. I jumped the fuel pump rely and the pump came on. I also run a ground and power line to pump and it worked. I have the bed off to work on it. Very strange. It only have a very young 165.000 miles on it and purrs very nice when it did run. I am checking the wiring but coming up empty.
Should also be key on voltage on the tan/light green wire at the pump relay. The ECM/computer grounds tan/light green to close the relay & turn the pumps on.
Thank you 87 XLT. I will check this out today. I turned wrenches for 15 years in the 80's before going into body work. So this Fuel injection and auto computers are new to me but I do catch on quick. I have a Chilton's manual but no wiring diragram in it. I restored this truck and was getting ready to put it on the road. Guess I am luckly that it happened now instead of on the road.. Thank you for the help and I will let you know.
Hi. I tried the jumper to turn on the pumps as shown in the link you gave me but got nothing. I get no voltage on the tan/light green wire on the replay with the key on. I not too sure what you mean on the ECM/computer grounds tan/light green to close the relay. I did check the computer gounds and the conections just to make sure. Still now power to the pumps. I checked every wire possable for a break or a blown fusable link and nothing. Even tore down the top of the motor so I could check the wiring in detail for a break or burn. This is causing me to pull what little hair I have left out. Anyone out there that could help me with this problem. Thank you very much,
Heres how it works. When you turn the key to run the main relay sends 12 volts to the coil side of the fuel pump relay on the red wire.
That voltage passes thru the relay coil to the Tan/light green wire.
Tan/light green is wired to pin 22 on the ECM/computer & the ECM grounds it to turn on the pumps.
Since you do have key on voltage on the red wire, but not on the tan/light green, it looks like your new pump relay is no good, or theres a break in the wiring of the relay mount.
Try putting your old pump relay back in & see what it does.
Hi 87 XLT. Thank you for the quick rely. I did put another new relay in just to try. The parts store guys let me try that. Could the new pump have failed. I can get it to work by jumping it but does that also mean its in good working order. It is weird. running really nice in my garage and I shut it off and now nothing. I checked the wiring but found nothing. and what are the chances of a wire breaking when it just sitting there idling. The new pump ran only for about 15 minutes. I have switched out the relays again just to check and nothing.
If your were working on it (thumpinh with a hammer) you may have tripped the inerta fuel cut off switch. Not sure that year has one, but if it does besure to try resetting/bypassing it.
Dave
OK, well the problem somewhere between the cutoff switch and the relay/power supply not between the switch and fuel pump. I have no info on the early trucks so good luck.

Since the pumps run when you jump the relay, that side of the circuit is fine.
You've swapped the relay twice, so it's not a relay problem.
Try this, hook up that jumper from the link I posted & turn the key on.
Wiggle the red & tan/light green wires at the pump relay & see if the relay clicks & the pumps turn on.
Found the problem!!!!!!Special thanks to 87 XLT. I was trying the new test 87 XLT asked me to do and nothing. But I started to follow the tan/light green wire thru the wiring harness. I cut off all the tape and removed most of the plastic shielding. I found a 2 yellow wires going into a fusable link and just one black wire coming out the other side of the link. It was broken. I had to take all the air cleaner system off the fender well and low and behold. a broken black wire on the starter solenoid perfect match. I fixed that and the fuel pump came on for its 3 second pump. YAHOO!!!! I now have a lot of work to clean up the wiring harness. and put the top of the engine back together before I can start it. I would rather have my finger nails pulled out then work on electrical. But I hung in there. Thank you 87 XLTfor your help.
