I just replaced my emergency brake cable, from handle to adjustment the one I had was pretty bad and coming apart anyway I replaced it and adjusted to what I thought was proper adjustment (pulled handle back to about five clicks) and nothing. What is the proper way to adjust drum brakes? maybe I'm missing something. Don't you jack UP wheel and and adjust beake rotating wheel until it is hard to rotate and back off to ??? I need a refresher course I really want my E.B. to work any help would be appreciated.
Sounds like you have adj. brake drums correctly. I have a 65 F100 stepside and on the underside of the truck, about where the cab meets the bed, there is a bracket where the rear brake cables attach and a lever the brake handle cable attaches to with an adjustment nut. Should be able to take up some tention by tightening the nut. Think it is the same for styleside trucks.
Thanks Dave, I guess I'll be adjusting that part a little more I adjusted both the brakes and the adjustment ander cab / bed but I guess I just need to adjust a little more I'll let you know if I solve the problem.
Assuming the parking brake componets in drums have been checked, may want to check the bracket located on crossmember that secures front flex section of brake cable with a clip allowing the wire to move in and out, operates simular to a chock cable. There is also a clip securing brake handle at firewall inside engine compartment, not sure about 64.

I was so happy to get my E-brake working on my 64. I still remember working at Hardees as a kid and some guy coming in to tell me my truck just rolled across the parking lot, lol. I would start by making sure the back cables are not rusted to the point that they will not move. You can take the drum off and have someone pull on the emergency brake for you to make sure they are engaging (moving the pads). Sounds like your front cable is working or you would not be able to pull it back 5 clicks. If both rear brakes are engaging when you pull the handle then you just need to tighten up the adjustment bolt in the center some.
PS: If by chance you have to order new cables for the rear, do not buy them from Blue oval truck parts. Mine came 7-8 inches short. I called and stated they were too short and they stated someone must have changed something over the years. I had some 1/8 inch cable and some double ferrels(used for trapping) so I added some length to get them to fit (should not have had to do this on a new part).
I am about to replace the cables from the adjuster to each rear wheel. I was planning on getting mine from National parts depot, but while looking online I found that Autozone carries the cables. I was gonna call them today to see if they can get them in the store. Would save me money on shipping.
I had the same problem and found that the cables at the drums were froze with 40 years of gunk. I spent a couple of hours spraying them with knockerloose and moving them until they looked clean. Filled them with grafite and they have worked great ever since.
