Hi, I have a 95 F150 straight 6, sweet truck; but I want to make sure the body will last. It's getting rust in all the normal Ford areas- bottom of the door, over the rear wheel well, ect. I am going to fix all the really bad areas with fiberglass resin and bondo, but I want to prevent the not-so-bad areas from getting any worse. I have heard of POR 15, people have told me that once you paint over rust spots it reverses the rusting process and turns it into primer, which you can then paint over. Is POR 15 the best way to take care of rust, or is there some other and better way? Thanks for the help!!!
IMO using fiberglass & bondo to repair a rust-out isn't the way to go. Only by cutting out the rusted metal and replacing it with new metal will net long-term results. As far as POR15, I haven't used it but I have been using Eastwood's Rust Encapsulator on my current major project ('70 Mach 1). I've read comments from others, however, who feel that RE is a better product than POR15. Others may hold differing opinions...
the best way to fix rust is to cut the panel and insert a new patch panel and weld it on. Then go about doing the regular paint job. As the fellas said here, bondo doesn't fix rust holes. It encourages growth. I know from experience that it makes it worse.
I actually am going to cut out all the rust over the wheelwell before I replace it with fiberglass. The reason I'm doing fiberglass is because I don't know how to weld. Is there something better than fiberglass and bondo that I should consider that doesn't involve welding?
Eastwood carries a patch panel bonding adhesive that seems to work pretty good. I welded in a wheel arch patch panel on one side of my F150's bed, and used the adhesive on the other and after about a year I can't visibly see any difference. Check out their website, www.eastwoodco.com They carry all kinds of things you never knew you just had to have!
