Just wondering if anyone that has put an Explorer rear end into there truck could give me some tips. I am fixing up a 49 M47(F100) and have been looking to put a explorer rear end in it, does anyone have any pics that has done this, how much manufacturing was involved for mounting, did you use the explorer springs? I am putting a fairly stock 302 in this truck so I think that an 8.8 would definitely handle it. Anything to watch for or tips would be greatly appreciated.
I haven't done it but several on the board here have. I used a Chrysler under mine with the Chrysler springs. I'd think that moving the spring perches would be necessary and if you got a rear with disc brakes the master cylinder would have to be changed to acomodate it. You may also have to have a new driveshaft. If you want something much easier to install I'd look at the 57-72 1/2 ton rear. It is very close to a bolt in but it will have the 5 on 5.5 pattern. What pattern do you have on the front?
I am putting a MII in the front so it will be the 5 X 4.5, I'm a first time customizer so just looking for the most user friendly way while still getting the car bolt pattern.
I've got a disc brake explorer rear end that I'll but installing soon. The explorer springs are way to long to use, and most of the springs from newer trucks are too long also. I broke down and ordered a kit from TCI which hasn't arrived yet, so no feedback yet. Before you buy the mii kit, take a look at the jaguar. Much cheaper.
I put a 94 explorer (not disc) in mine, I used the springs off of a 87 Bronco they look the same as the small Rangers. Nothing hard I cut off the spring perches on bottom and put new ones on the top. Once I had my pinion angle set I tacked it in then took it out and welded it good. I also used the explorer end off the drive shaft.

Thanks for the replies, Jaye do you have any more pics of your install? I was hoping to mount the axle on top of the springs to help sit it down some more, but will have to see if that requires knotching the frame. Did you find the width of the axle good, as it looks like it is a couple of inches narrower than original, but this can probably be made up with offset wheels?
