Believe it or not you don't need any tools to change the belt on a 6.0.There is a tab at about 6 o'clock on the tensioner assembly that holds the tensioner slack once you pull up on the belt at the alternator.
Just exactly where do I pull up on the belt to make the TAB set for belt removal. I put an alt. on it in the fall and made a tool to work on the tensioner. But it's gone now... Seems like there isn't much room to maneuver a belt in and out of the shroud. Do you remove the fan shroud ?
Thanks

Yes the add on bit at the back clips in and out, remove it and it doubles the room to get your arms in there.
My new to me X has a fairly loud noise coming from the serpentine belt area. My plan is to change the belt and inspect the pulleys. I am certain one of them is bad. Is there a certain one to look for? Thanks for the diagrams Stuart!

Stewart, not Stuart. If ya can't remember, just look at my forum user name.
I'd look at your idler/tensioner pulley and your water pump pulley. If your water pump is starting to go bad, the first sign (other than starting to drip) can very well be a pulley starting to make noise.
Your power steering pump pulley might also be the culprit, but I'd check the idler/tensioner pulley first.
I'm a crazy or is there a belt coming off the radiator in my way??? I have it all wrapped around except to the power steering pulley because of that hose.
Yep, I'd change that hose while you are at it. It could save you a big headache if you shred a belt on the road. A spare does no good if you can't get it on. I had a belt start to shred and it took out my dipstick. Wasn't sure why the belt jumped off track some but I replaced the idler pulley and the tensioner assembly. Didn't cost too much and worth the piece of mind. I have about 150K on my Excursion now and find myself replacing parts that may not be bad yet but are prone to wear. Want to get 250K out of it without too many breakdowns.
For those that are not changing the hose, there is a tool that can be used to clamp the radiator hose shut to prevent coolant loss. I know harbor freight has them as I have one of theirs. I've basically a pair of vise grips with flat, dull bars on the end. I think it's called "Radiator Hose Blockoff tool" maybe. Squeeze the middle of the hose shut so they lock, undo the hose, and you won't lose AS MUCH. Changing the hose to one that doesn't interfere with the belt is still ideal.
Anyone know where I could get a color image of the sticker so that I could print and reapply? the one that washed off isn't in very good shape to use for scanning or capturing with a photo.
