Make sure to check out the tensioner when you replace the belt. The tensioner fell apart on the F250 at 225K miles. Made it home but the belt was gone.

To think if the tensioner was still good would the original belt still be working at 249K miles?

The 00 X is original at 180K miles.

My wifes Uncle had the belt brake on his 97 F250 PSD at 180 miles. Ford decided to remove the single pulley and added a dual pulley and when he traded in the truck for his 04 F350 he called me to see if I wanted his belt that he bought as a spare in 1997. When traded the truck had 325K miles on it. Auto tranny with just one torque convertor replacement and one CPS.

Just a big THANK YOU to Stuart H for the info....

....before I found this post with a search I was frustrated and about to go to a dealer for something that I have been able to do on every car I have owned. I could not move the tensioner with a wood dowl. After changing the belt on my last Suburban in about ten minutes, I thought Ford forgot that peolple might have to work on these trucks some day. BUT, because Stuart H shares, we win!

Like what has already been posted several times, all you need to do is to insert a 1/2" drive breaker bar or ratchet in the socket in the belt tensioner. While your at it, check the condition of the belt tensioner and the idler pulley.

Believe it or not you don't need any tools to change the belt on a 6.0.There is a tab at about 6 o'clock on the tensioner assembly that holds the tensioner slack once you pull up on the belt at the alternator.

They also make serpentine belt removal tools that come with adapters for every possible variation for idler pullys. I have used it on my chevrolets, mustangs, and all my ford trucks. Similiar in length to a breaker bar, possibly even longer but not as bulky, does the job quite nicely.

THEN I figured someone with a 6.8L gasser would post up eventually (today, tomorrow, next month, next year after digging up an old thread, etc) and ask if I could provide the routing for their gasser.

So I used a shotgun to kill a fly. All in one post.

Good thinking Stewart.....feel sorry for that fly though....

Rep points for you!
