Email from my son

So, I was checking out this exploding star....
http://www.tcd.ie/Physics/Schools/what/stars/EtaCarinae.html

... and I thought "How long until the shockwave hits us?"

Well, it is 8,000 LY away, and to us it happened 150 years ago.
So, that means the actual event transpired 8,150 years ago.

The shock wave is traveling at about 1.5 million miles an hour.
8,000 LY is 47,029,002,985.468864 million miles.
8,150 years is (8,150 * 365 * 24) = 7,139,400 hours.

So, to this date the shock wave has traveled (7,139,400 * 1.5) = 1,070,910,000 million miles.
That leaves a remaining distance of about (47,029,002,985.468864 - 1,070,910,000) = 46,921,911,985.468864 million miles.

Okay, so how long until it gets here?

Well, (46,921,911,985.468864 / 1.5) suggests 312,812,744,656 hours.
In years that is (312,812,744,656 / (365 * 24)) = 3,570,921.

Phew! What a relief!

Thanks for that Jake!

Looks like a great bloody rose, doesn't it? Not one you would want to get up close to for a sniff however.

I read in the paper this morning that they discovered a huge fireball travelling through the galaxies, eating up mucho galaxies etc along the way. It's supposed to be some crazy number like 93 million times the size of our sun, or something like that. We live in a fun place, eh? I didn't read far enough to see how fast it was supposed to be travelling, but I suppose with that size and all, its probably moving quickly per second.

So, should we make dinner plans or not bother?

One thing is for sure. The universe is big. Not infinate, but dang big.

Huh? If the universe isn't infinite, what's at the end of it? We're not in a shoe box with a few foam ***** as a science project.

Right on hoss. It's just difficult for the mind of man to encompass infinite.

infinities aren't applicable to the universe. Just as time is not infinate, space cannot be. It's a philosophy thing. If you'd like, I'll give you an example of how infinites can't really be in a physical universe, but only in the mind.

the actual size of the universe is something that man cannot comprehend. its just too great. someday we will understand it, but its not likely to be for a few hundred years or so.

Your philosophy can define your reality, but not the greater reality.
