Fuel gauge on my 68f100 360 doesn't work. Reckon what's wrong? Also, what warning lights should the truck have? None come on when I turn the key. Truck sat up 6-8 yrs before I bought it in July.
If your truck isn't equipped with an ammmeter or an oil pressure gauge you should have a light for each. The oil light would come on when you turn the key on. I THINK the alternator light would come on while cranking. As far as the fuel gauge, assuming the fuse is good, it might be the voltage limiter on the back of the printed circuit behind the instrument cluster. Before you go yanking the dash out, find the wire that runs to your fuel tank sending unit. Have someone watch the gauge, (unless your fuel tank is behind the seat, you can see it yourself) and ground the wire for a second and see if the gauge quickly goes to full. If the gauge doesn't move you can rule out the sending unit as a suspect. The voltage limiter on the back of the instrument cluster looks like a small metal box. On one side of it you should have 12 volts with the key on. The other side will only show about 5, and will make a test light flicker on and off if it is working properly.
