I just had surgery on my rotator cuff yesterday and discovered I can't drive for 4 weeks while I am in a sling. It is agaist the law. Bummer, the truck is just going to sit there and I have to depend on my wife to take me every where.
3 years ago my left rotator cuff was so bad i could not lift my arm. after 3 months of physical therapy 3 days per week, it is fully mended. now i need to do the right cuff, i screwed that one up over the winter..
I had my rotator cuff operated on about 6 weeks ago. I was driving within a week. Don't know if the situation is the same, mine is auto with power steering. I just started doing some active movement in PT (moving it with the other arm) instead of them moving it. OH MAN, I am using muscles that haven't been used in 10 weeks. Good luck, just don't over do it. I have heard of many reinjuring theirs pushing too hard.
Apparently if you are in an accident your insurance is null & void. If you only have 1 arm you can drive & be covered but not if you are in a sling. Just did the first set of stretches. Ouch
Oh just wait, it gets better. I still have 10 weeks of therapy yet. That makes a total of 16, yes 4 months. Not exactly the way I was planning my summer. I don't know if it makes a difference what the doctors did during the surgery. I had 2 muscles completely torn off and 1 partially torn off the rotator cuff. Wish I would have just left the ATV in the garage that day.
I did it because I couldn't lift my arm above my shoulder or lift anything heavy or light out to the side or throw a ball. The pain would wake me up at nite. If you think it will improve your quality of life, do it.
Is this surgery worth doing? I need to have both of mine done and have been debating it.
I guess it would depend alot on age, physical condition, and complexity of the surgery. Many different problems can be fixed and they call it "rotator cuff surgery". They may fix cartilage damage, muscle damage, ligaments, and it all rotator cuff. The recovery time and method varies greatly. I am 35 and in average physical condition. I had no choice but to have the surgery. I have been doing very controlled movement with my arm for about a week now and the muscles in the effected shoulder feel like I went to the gym and worked out very strenuously yesterday. It had been 11 weeks since the accident and hadn't been able to use that arm up till last week. I also occasionally get a "catch" in my shoulder. The physical therapist says these conditions are normal and will improve with time.
