When did Ford first start putting turbos on these engines? I was thinking about looking around for a used one, and want to know what years to look for. Also, anything special, I should check for, when looking at a used turbo. What all will I need to do the swap, to an 86, 6.9?
I think 93 was the first year for factory turbos. One of the gurus will chime in for sure and let us know. It's amazing the knowledge available here!!! Love it!!
That was my thinking as well, option on 93, standard on 94. There were many kits available prior to that, and many are still available. 6.9 and 7.3 will share all exhaust parts, so it doesn't matter which it was hooked to. Generally, turbo's hold up pretty good, the only problem they get is the bearing going bad. My father's farm tractors used to cash in a turbo every few years, but that was because he didn't seem to know how to change an air filter, he went by the vacuum guage, that didn't always work. He ignored the clean daily in dusty conditions warning on the housing... suck the seals right out of the turbos.
Factory Turbo systems for the IDI trucks were available in 1993 and 1994 only. These systems were developed by ATS for Ford and you can still buy them from ATS for the IDI's.
Note, the ATS system is actually better than the Ford system that was provided from the factory. The ATS system has less inlet and exhaust restriction than the factory Ford system.
The ATS system with a 3" downpipe and exhaust in lieu of the factory 2 1/4" downpipe will give you more power and let you boost more.
Factory turbo's (mine is a Garrett) came with waste gates set at 7.0 psig to limit the maxiumum turbo boost. I have gone as high as 10 psig but with my 2 1/4" exhaust and no aftercooler can't go much higher as my pyro temperatures are approaching 1,100 deg. F which is getting close to piston melting temperatures.
Since Ford only sold the factory turbo on the IDI for 2 years they are going to be hard to find. Most would still be on the road today, mine is going strong with only 215,000 km on the ticker.
Hemiyota, there are 3 aftermarket turbos that I know of....most expensive-Banks @ around $2500.00....ATS, cheaper, then Hypermax @ around $1600.00...a local shop wanted $1200.00 Canadian for a used ATS, he still has it and can keep it for that price! PS, the prices of the new turbos are in American dollars but with the rise in the loonie there's not difference.
