Well if youve ever been to, or worked at the switch yards... they leave there engines on, cause if you jshut it down the train will actaully use more fuel, getting hot again, and starting up. So actaully leaving a deisle running at idle for even 10 mins would be more fuel effecient (sp?) then shutting it down and firing it up again.

One question, im confused what straight pipe means. does that mean from the turbo back there is no cat, resinator, or muffler?

Yes but engines polute more especially when they are diesels and left idling. Look at the smoke a diesel makes when it is accelerating. Look at the gas car, no smoke. Ergo, the diesel is bad and gas is clean. If you cannot see soot, it is clean, right?

aklim... i hope your being sarcastic lol. but lets assume you arent. Deisels exhaust is heavey, so it sinks to the ground, wich polute the ozone less. They are more effecient than gas engines... i need to go find the post on straight pipes... i need to convince the old man (my dad) that he should do that.

I'm not. That is how people seem to think. Diesel is dirty because we see the trucks spew tons of black smoke as opposed to cars that don't. Of course the semi hauls tons of stuff but nobody thinks about that. Problem is the comparisons are apples to oranges.

When I went to school to get emission certified they said that diesels pollute less, but the exhaust is visible so people think they pollute more. Gassers actually belch a LOT more carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, etc than diesel engines. Especially the old carburated ones. They are all "gross polluters".

Myself, I have never heard of even a gasoline engine starting a fire while refueling. I have been fooling with cars and trucks nearly ever since I could walk. Spent years in drag racing. I have witnessed and maybe myself extinguished burning cigarettes in a can of gas (don't suck on it hard and get it glowing) with no disasterous results. But I usually turn my PSD off while fueling only cuz I am cheap and do not want to waste the fuel.

What has your crap got to do with anything. They know the world better than you. For all you know, maybe it might light up on a Wed night at 2333 hrs if you are standing on your right foot and the wife is in the car drinking on a Crapsi. They are being safe for you.

And if you believe that, I have this slightly used bridge or Oceanfront property in Az to sell real cheap.

What about at the drive thru at fast food joints?

I never shut off my truck while filling up because of the wear and tear on my wrist. It takes a lot to turn the key. I need to save my wrist for surfing the internet at home.

I do have just about every zit faced kid at the drive thru ask me to turn off the engine because he can't hear me. I tell them if I shut it off I won't start back up because something is worng with my truck! This may work with fueling as well.

Is that what you call it? I have heard it called spanking the monkey, beating the bishop but never "surfing the internet".

I just tell them I can't hear them for the clatter if it were me.

As far as the foaming when fueling, it foam at the top right? If you are not sucking your fuel from the very top of your fuel tank, I dont see how the bubbles will get into your fuel system.

Had it happen again today. Dang Yuppie in a Benz.

Could not believe his comment. "Hey, you trying to blow up my $35K car?" I just smiled at him and said, "No, just my $40K truck!" Next thing I know, he whips some badge out, with some out of state logo and demands my license. As I had just finished and it was on the bosses charge card, I just replied as I got into my truck, "It's on the dang bumper, run it if you are so smart.

Please note that the conversation was really cleaned up for the general public to read. That yuppie had quite a foul mouth and I just could not resist letting him have it back at full throttle. I am too old for this young yuppie BS.

But if you have an empty enough of a tank, when you fuel up the foam isn't totally flat and aerated fuel will get sucked up. It's just my reason now to stop the engine before fueling up, plus fuel is expensive these days.

Talking Yuppie

I LOVE IT. Not so much the exchange, but the $35k benz vs the $40k truck. Too bad you didn't have a leaky injector o-ring to give him a nice blast blue/black as you left.

I can see that. I just never let it get much below a quarter tank, mainly because it is kind of embarassing to see a grown man crying after putting close to $100 dollars in fuel in his truck
