I have a 460 in my mud truck with c6 trans. Every other weekend or so the starter goes out (dragging, grinding, not engaging) from playing in the river. On my Jeep I have a 350 chevy that has that has a sealed fourwheel drive starter on it. Does anybody know if FORD or the aftermarket offer anything like that?
I have tried sillicone on all the seams were it bolts togather but there is no way to seal the shaft in the nose cone.
If the 460 was ever used as a marine engine, you could try a marine supply for a starter.
If you want to waterproof it yourself, somehow you need to put an O-ring the shaft. You could machine out a groove or attach a retainer either inside or outside.
Alternatively, a truly redneck method would be some hot melt glue to keep the O-ring in place, though it's anyone's guess how long would that last, especially if the starter gets hot. If the hot melt glue doesn't work, you could try epoxy or crazy glue, though they are a bit trickier to work with.
when you get home after playing, unhook the coil and crank the starter a few times- not too long at once though- it'll help dry out the innner windings and such, maybe that'll help a bit??
I have been using a CVR products gear reduction starter on my mud drag truck for the past 2 yrs with no problems, I did buy the high torque one which is a little spendy but I am also spinning a 13.5:1 compression big block stroker but so far it hasn't had any trouble with getting water or mud inside of it. I believe they are sealed fairly well with orings so you might give that a try.
I have been using that same CVR starter as mentioned above by monsterbaby (by his recomendation too, thanks Rob!), and have to second that it is a quality piece well sealed and I have had zero problems with it sucking in mud and grit.
Thanks for your guy's input. I am at my wits end on this. Who or where do I get my hands on the crv starter. How does it hold up to heat? A local mechanic thought I might ought to try 2 starter silonoids. has anybody tried this?
And here is the real expensive one, I had to run, and I think Pro is running it too but I also run a lot of compression. but on the plus side it's almost twice the power, and they do have them in stock right now. http://www.partzfinder.com/High_Torq...cvr-5048-m.htm
I've seen people try and water proof all kinds of thing with doubled up paper bags and duct tape. This usually had to be done before each bog or wheeling event.
Your starter is only as water proof as your bellhousing is, i've found that the biggest killer to starters is that the water gets in through the bellhousing then into the starter that way, so make sure your bellhousiung is sealed up good n' tight.
Hey brian, look close I don't think the originator of this thread has much to worry about a shift fork boot, actually come to think about it I don't think anyone has much to worry about a shift fork boot as I have never seen a shift fork with a boot on it.
