Question Burning Rubber Smell

I have a 2001 F350 Diesel Crewcab Dually pickup w/180K on it. Just had to replace the transmission last week. Other than this, have had no propblems with the truck. The last few months from time to time I am smelling a burning rubber smell coming from the rear dually area. Can brake shoes make this smell. Any ideas on what to check out would be appreciated.

A long time ago some one posted about a burning rubber smell. I know its not from the back, but the problem ended up being the rubber grommet cover at the alternator. The nut had backed off enough that when under load, it was creating a large amount of heat burning up the rubber cover. What about the rubber line off the diff for venting.

Would that also be accompanied by some mysterious new marks on the road behind you?

You mean as in a slightly locked rear brake? My first PSD (95 dually) had that problem and was repaired under warranty.

Kwik is probably referring a little more towards 4 long black marks magically starting right behind the tires

I have also smelled that burning rubber smell after backing up and going to the back of the truck to get my tools, but this is on a 97 F-250 Gasser, I've looked and looked but i could never find what is burning.
