head gasket thickness

I tried to measure my head gasket to get a rough idea of the compressed thickness. The gasket itself measured around .020, but the steel ring that sits on top of the cylinder bore it about .040. which measurement is the proper one to use to determined a rough estimate of compressed thickness. I am not sure if the ring get compressed as well as the gasket.

Thankyou for any info., Jason

Are you sure of those dimensions? Compressed thickness should be around .040". What brand/part# gasket is it?

The steel ring is the proper thickness. Most small block head gaskets are about .040-.043 compressed.
