I have a 93, 2.3 liter ranger that I bought cheap and have been messing around with. The check engine light is on, I pulled the codes and got what I'm almost sure is a code - 121 - and - 222 -. As far as I cant tell, my book tells me that code 121 mean "Throttle Position sensor out-of-self test range". Ok, so I took a volt meter and tested the TPS and it seems to be working all except the center pin. The books says the voltage on the center pin 'TP' should increase smoothly to greater than 3.5v. Ok, well, it does that, but what gets me, should the voltage start at 3.5, or should it be lower on the center pin, with the key on ? Oh am i barking up the wrong tree on this code 121 ?
Next, the code 222, "IDM open or high or right coil pack failure" that one stumps me ! On a guess, I would say go out and buy two used coil-packs and start switching them out ? Or would it more than likely be the ignition module hanging onside the intake ? Can anyone help me with either ? Thanks for any an all help.
BTW, the thing runs, it kinda misses just a tiny bit, but it runs. And another thing, at times it starts by just hitting the key, other times you have to hold WOT before it will start, else it just cranks and cranks.
As far as the throttle position, It should be no lower than .9 volts at closed throttle, and no more than 5 volts at WOT. Any less than that indicates a bad TPS, anything higher indicates a toasted PCM. If it's throwing a code for the TPS, chances are it needs replaced.
I'm not positive which one would be indicated as a right side coil pack, but switch the two around and see if the code changes to a left side coil pack. If it doesn't this will indicate a bad connection from the PCM/DIS module (on the front of the intake) and or a bad DIS module. DIS modules are notorious for causing simple irritating little problems.

So, on the center pin, (TP) there shouldn't be 3.4 volts with the key on and the car not started, thats to high then ? With the key on, the center pin on my car has 3.4 volts. And the place where im getting the information from states "the voltage increases smoothly to greater than 3.5V as the throttle plate is moved". Mine starts out at 3.4, so it's confusuing me. I'm getting the information from here ..
It's about as clear as mud to me about what voltage should be on the center pin with the key on.

Good point, i'll give that a try, hadn't even thought of that. Thanks for the ideal.
CM means continuous memory. Since both of your current codes are KOEO, you are correct in starting with 122. Ignore 222 until 122 is fixed or you may be wasting your time.

Ok, thanks man. Any advice on removing the screws that hold the TPS to the throttle body? I think they may have been glued into the screw holes !!
Shew!!! Finally got them out. I hacksawed the heads off the screws flush with the top of the TPS. Slipped the TPS off, and filed flat spots on two opposing sides of each screw. Backed them out with a small crescent wrench. I'll have to round up replacement screws, they might come with the new TPS, if im lucky.
handyman...am having very rough running engine also...first Ford told me plugs and wires. changed those out and it didnt help. so took back to Ford, and then they said it was pcm(powertrain control module)...i am leary of this, heard these very seldom go bad...maybe it is my DIS pack, but heck i hate to buy either (both 2-3 hundred bucks) without having better odds...i also have a 94 2.3 liter...any hints would be appreciated...
