okay- finally got the f100 converted to power steering(again), including putting in the correct motor mount tower. i've had the power steering gear in-and-out so many times i can do it blindfolded.
only problem now is...it's leaking. not from the upper or lower seals, but seems to be from where the steering shaft (that connects to the steering column) goes into the gear. it's a steady drip, about every two seconds.
is this an in-truck repair? because even though i can rip it all back out, i'd really rather not.
I am in the process of converting my `67 F-100 from manual to power steering. Since the steering gear had been out of use for years and was covered in grease, I decided to put a seal kit in it. I opted for the complete kit with upper and lower seals and also new O-rings for the worm shaft/ piston assembly. You can buy the seal kit for the worm shaft where yours is leaking. It is definitly something that will have to be done on the workbench. The kit consists of a dust seal, snap ring, and seal. I recommend investing in a $10 seal puller if you don`t have one. Snap ring pliers are also a must. Let me know if you want any more info about the complete rebuild and lower seals.
Good luck.

john, i wish you were right-
but we changed the upper and lower seals at your garage a few months back, remember?
i crawled under the truck with a flashlight- it's dripping out of the gear right where the steering column shaft goes in. i think it's the one seal that you and i didn't swap.
this project is KILLING me...so close, yet so far.
no big deal, i guess- i need to pull the pump bracket to shim it out a bit farther, anyway. might as well pull the gear again while i'm in there.
stretch67- i've got snap-ring pliers...any tips on replacing this seal would be greatly appreciated.
Sam,
The dust cover can be pried out with an awl or sharp screwdriver. Then remove the snap ring. To remove the seal, puncture a hole on one side of the seal with a center punch or sharp drift punch. This will give the sharp point on your seal puller something to grab on to. Lever the seal out. Drive the new one in with a deep socket. I used good grease on everything going back together. It`s pretty straightforward.

does this require the removal of the input shaft (i.e., disassembly of the gear)? or can i do it by removing the rag joint coupling from the shaft, and then pulling the old seals out from around the input shaft?
i'm assuming that the rag joing coupling can be removed...correct me if i'm wrong.
Sam, Yes, you can pull the rag joint out and yes you can replace the seal without disassembling the gear. If you are trying to do it with the gear in the truck you will be an expert contortionist when your done. I did mine in the vice. Good luck.
