so if water comes back threw the overflow it is an automatic cavitation prob? and cavitation meaning motor is shot and cant be repaired?

I not sure what the book says for compression, the best check for compression is always a comparison check. Pull out the glow plugs and test each cylinder. They should all be within the same range.

No Iomac, the motor can be repaired, Most machine shops can put a sleeve in the bad cylinder, its usually about a 100 bucks. But the motor has to be completely dissembled and clean before they will work on it or they will charge you their rate for doing the same

It is normal for some water to flow through the overflow.
Expansion and contraction of the coolant from cold to hot and back causes that.

Cavitation and blown head gaskets can put air in the cooling system.
The amount of air will depend on where the hole is and how big it is.

As far as compression, you should see in the 400 PSI range. High mileage motors will be lower.

The readings from cylinder to cylinder should be within 10% from the highest to lowest.

So if your highest reading is 400, the lowest should be over 360.
