Hey I recently purchased a 1992 ford F 150 with the EFI 4.9 liter inline six and 5 speed manual trans. I love the truck I was just wondering a couple of things that I was hoping you guys could answer for me. The first thing is, what would be considered a redline for the big six, and the second thing would be what can I do to give my truck some more power, I live in CA so it does need to be smog legal. The truck is completly stock exept for things I have replaced like waterpump, alt, rad, etc, etc, the only thing I have realy done is take the muffler off. I would like to keep my bill under $500.00 or $600.00. Any help to these questions would be good.
you could start with a tune up, fuel filter and try a K&N air filter. My 89 F150 I did a tune up , the K&N air filter, tweaked the timing and put on a true dual exhaust, and she runs great for 255,000 miles
I did a tune up recently that included plugs distributer cap (cracked) rotor (warn) alt, rad, water pump, valvecover gasget, brake pads, fuel filter. Is there anything else that I could do.
Thanks I realy appreciate the help!!!!
I would replace the spark plug wires so that whole system from distib to plugs is done and out of the way....you'll know any other problem is probably not in that system.
I can get my I6 to 4500 but that is very tight! 3500-4000 is about right.
When changing the diff. fluid, make sure to put the additive in if it is limited slip.
Check all the vacuum lines and fix any that is bad or looks bad plus what everyone else said!
i have an automatic transmission (E4OD). the one or two times i have floorboarded the pedal, the tranny shifted at 3,500 rpm.
to get a bit more umpf out of her, i agree with the air filter and maybe some exhaust. you could try to fab up a ram-air system. upgrade the rearend if you want more pulling power. since you have emissions to worry about, it is a bit more difficult to give you suggestions for more power. good luck and let us know how things go.

You'd be perfectly safe figuring redline at 4000 rpm and you won't get more out of the stock engine by passing 4000. I usually don't go much over 3600. The 4000 rpm redline also works geat with the DATCON 0-4000 rpm tach (see in my gallery).
