My 86 Bronco II will just shut down at different times cold and warm at an idle or in gear driving down the road.
When it cuts out it has fuel pressure but no spark. It has New TFI module, New cap, New rotor, Newer plus & New wires. after about 1 minute it fires right back up and sometimes dies again after about 10 min. driving.
Sounds like a faulty TFI module or coil. Sounds more like the TFI module is overheating. I think somewhere in the tech info threads there is information about a test module / troubleshooting.
Then you'll probably want to pull codes with nothing bypassed (fuel pump, sensors, etc) and see what comes up. There is also info in the tech threads that gives info on how to test the sensors individually. Not sure what exactly all affects spark, though
I think pulling codes is probably one of the first things I would do. Sometimes there are clues left in the computer's memory.
Don't forget to check the wiring. You say it appears to be losing spark. My first guestimate is that you have a loose connection somewhere. A bad connection in the wiring to the ICM, maybe a problem in the wiring to the coil. Don't forget to check grounds, too.
I checked all wiring. everything looks good, grounds are good form battery to chassis, chassis to motor & motor to fire wall. After a few minutes it will start right back up
The harness to the TFI module could be bad (there was a recall for the wires getting loose) and the test procedure is listed, amoung other places, on the Popular Mechanics CD.
The connection to the coil could be bad, especially in a state that salts roads. I posted a long time ago about how my coil connector was bad even though it tested good.
I think the quickest and most likely culprit is a bad ECU relay, which if it went out, and since the problem comes and goes, would prevent starting and prevent spark. Though I would not rule out a bad TFI module. That can cause the same problems, hot or cold.
I had a truck that did that once, what had happened was when the dist cap got hot, it expanded and when it got cool it contracted, I found out by taking a flashlight and shining it under the dist cap...so maybe...if not, you could always buy an aftermarket ignition (msd, etc..) and that should take care of it if you can't figure it out...
