My 7.3 in my 96 f-250 smokes white on startup for about 10 min. then it runs completly clean. I took it to a ford garage they replaced 1 injector and the glow plugs, now my truck still smokes white on startup but now it also smokes black. The black smoke comes and goes, but it still smokes white for 10 min. If anyone has any advice it would be appreciated.
my guess would be that the actual relay (Glow Plug Relay) that controls the plugs is bad, and it's not sending juice to the new plugs. replace that and it should cure your problems. it did on our 1995 PSD.
also moderators this should be in the OBS 7.3 forum

I just changed the glow plug relay and the fuel filter, still has alot of smoke. When I took it to the dealership I was missing on 1 cylinder and white smoke for 5 min. then the truck ran totally clean. After the dealership the miss went away for 2 days but the white smoke got severely worse, and then I had black smoke once in a while, and also dumping black on acceleration.(it never did that before) I bought this truck 1 year ago and unti about 1 month ago it was the cleanest deisel I had ever seen. I bought a set of used injectors and I have sent them out to be rebuilt. Do you think injectors might solve the problem? I have stuck $1,400 into this problem already and it keeps getting worse.
Just updating whats been done to my truck, I took it to a deisel shop, and they found that the fuel pump was only putting out 10 psi. They replaced the pump but I still have white smoke and a miss on #3 cylinder. They checked all my wiring and connections and found no problems. Tomorrow they are going to pull all the injectors and put new seals in. Do you think this could be the problem? The shop was very suprised that I made it the hour drive to thier shop with no issues, due to low fuel pressure.
The white smoke definitely sounds like it could be leaky injector o-rings....but the sudden onset of black smoke???? Maybe a restriction in the intake.
My trucks problem was that the previous owner had replaced the #3 injector and broke the bottom out of the injector sleeve, then he just stuffed an injector into the hole and said good enough. I don't know why it took a year for it to start smoking. But that was the answer to my smoking problem.
