I dont know if I have a problem with my engine but on startup right after the engine starts I get a cloud of white smoke from my pipes. It contiues for about 2-3 seconds after startup and then the smoke quits. Then when going down the road when I shift I get a puff of black smoke right after I let of the gas to shift. Any ideas as to what this could be weather good or bad?
The white smoke is water vapor from the exhaust system. You get condensation as you exhaust system cools down, especially at night. No real problem even new cars do this. The black smoke is the real trouble. It is probably your vavle seals and guides. You didn't say what motor or how many miles are on it. It may be time for just rebuilding the heads or depending on the miles a full rebuild.
Yeah thats right! A busted modulator will suck tranny. fluid all the way to the intake and be burned with the fuel mixture causing a white smoke with an odor to it.

Dunt cha read his message? He's a shiftin' and gettin' a puff--not an automatic.
Doin' a rebuild before doing some testing is like the dentist pulling the tooth and it's the wrong one!! (yikes)
The white smoke is water vapor--- an internal leak of coolant in the combustion chamber. Doesn't sound real bad as not happening after warm up and running. Do a (or have done) a cylinder leak-down test and/or a coolant system pressure test to see if the head gasket is leaking (possibly very little when it's sitting for a period of time collecting in the combustion chamber, then start-up).
The puff of black smoke when he's a lettin' off der gas might be something as simple as a ruptured power valve in the carburetor ($8.00 fix)
or a rather high fuel level in the float bowl (all assuming he's carbureted and not injected, of course). A high level in the bowl means rather rich, and can cause flooding and unstable fuel level control with the sudden deceleration of letting off the gas to shift, with excess raw fuel spilling into the carb throat.
white smoke usually means water, black too much fuel and blue is earl ... not much harder than that but finding out what it means that is another story. Got to keep your teeth instead of seeing the dentist .....
