CPS or not?

amid the flurry of recent cps questions/problems, i believe i have the same prob, but just wanted to know what you guys think.

on my way home, truck started running like crap... and would sputter and lose boost and power anywhere above 2000 rpm. also sounds like injector noise from hell....the usual injector clatter from the drivers side of the motor times ten. oh, and it smokes like crazy when you stomp on it. i changed the fuel filter already and made sure the air filter was clean, but no help there. just wanted to know before i plunk down $100-200 on a non-returnable electrical part.

That sounds more like a fuel problem.

Sounds like an injector o-ring to me. Definitely not the cam sensor....well, probably not.

anything else? i've always had problems with crud in the tank. i'm getting ready to drop the tank and have a look,clean it out and while i'm at it, do the in-tank mod and pre-pump mod, and pull the pump off the frame rail to see if there is any obstruction. i thought i would start at the back of the truck and work my way forward...its the cheapest place to start, anyway

None of those actions will hurt the truck. Unfortunately I do not think they are the solution to your problem. Hope I am wrong.

i just started to drain the tank... using (i forgot whose) method with some fuel hose over the filter drain using jumper cables to power the pump...i will post pictures tomorrow of the crud sitting in the bottom of the bucket i drained into... i didn't even believe it at first.

now, anybody got advice on the best method for cleaning a fuel tank out? i'm halfway tempted to pitch it and look for a new one... i have no idea how much crud is in there. i was thinking of using some alcohol to clean the inside out.

do i need to worry about this crud i found working its way to the injectors? or will the filter have most likely caught it beforehand?

I would tend to think the filter was doing it's job.
Having experienced the same thing as you, but to a much lesser degree, I recommend that you remove the fuel pump and clean out the intake screen that is located just inside pump body on the intake side. Or simply get a new pump.

IF you have the tank out you might try a pressure washer or car wash.
Anything that won't come out them probably won't cause you problems either.
I agree about cleaning the pump, i did it with compressed air from the tank side.
I don't mind work the needs to be done, just hate to find that i did it the hard way after i finish.

That would be my idea, and it works very well too if I say so myself. Now I cannot see any reason to pitch a tank. Of course I cut a hole in the bottom of mine and it was relatively clean. Actually surprisingly clean.

As for your tank crud, if it is that bad, it depends on your mods there. If you are going to sump it, no sweat, cheap $3 Wally pre-pump filter and then replace when clogged. If not, I will await your pics of the mess in there. I would think cleaning a tank is far cheaper than a new one.

Finally, I think a functioning filter bowl filter will have saved your injectors.

okay... i've got some of my supplies needed for the in tank and pre pump mods. having trouble finding stainless fuel line though... is this absolutely necessary?

also, i went to a local filter supply place and bought a cheap ($25) filter head which accepts fram fuel filters (big spin-on style, like a normal oil filter canister) that have a water block built in. is there any problem with running something like this pre-pump? i haven't heard anybody talking about anything except for dahl filters and the like, but figured "who cares? its under the frame rail, cheap and filters are easy to find?".

Nah...mild steel works just fine. Maybe better since you don't have to crush the compression fittings so hard.

k...so i got the tank dropped and... nothing. the tank was almost spotless. there were a few small chunks of crud, but nothing that should make my truck want to play dead. so then i pulled the pickup and proceeded with the in-tank mod and harpoon mod, but then decided i would open up the old mixing chamber and see whats up:

hey kwik... was this on par with your experience? the metal bowl is full of the fuel that came out of the pump (which was subsequently replaced):

so after all this, i put it back together with a new pickup, pre-pump filter, new pre-pump fuel line and new pump... and it runs better than even when it was new, or had broken in at 50k. i think it always had crud in the tank/fuel system. anyway, i can get it to break loose in first and second gear now. i am satisfied. until next weekend.
