I HAVE A 68 F-100 SWB W/70 302 & C-6. I FOUND A GOOD DEAL ON A 76 460.
HOW DIFFICULT OF A SWAP IS THIS? I KNOW I AM GOING TO HAVE TO CHANGE SOMETHING ON THE TRANSMISSION, BUT I'M NOT SURE WHAT? I 'VE GOT A CALL INTO A TRANSMISSION SHOP THAT IS GOING TO ANSWER SOME QUESTIONS AS WELL.
WILL I NEED A DIFFERENT TORQUE CONVERTER? WHAT MOTOR MOUNTS CAN I USE? I KNOW I HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM BUT I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHAT ELSE I AM GOING TO ENCOUNTER WHEN I DO THIS.
I went in the opposite direction earlier this year. Your transmission will not work the bellhousing on a 460 is much bigger than a 302.
You will also have to change the engine towers get some from a junk yard. Find a truck that had a big block those will work
In addition to finding 460 engine mounts from a 73-79 and a 460 c6 transmission, you will have to have your driveshaft modified for length. Maybe someone on the list who has done this will provide some measurements for you. The wheelbase on the 73-79's is two inches longer so you can't use the original shaft from one of these.
What about headers for this swap? Are there any available? I've also got a 68 F100, and I plan on doing the 460 swap someday soon, but I don't really want to choke down my 501 inch big block with exhaust manifolds.
Get ahold of L&L and they can help with the headers, as well as other componets. Your drive shaft will need to be shorten but let the drive line shop take care of the details call them first tell then what your doing and they will tell you where to take your measurement from. I've done two in a bronco (79) and have come out sweet but I had to deal with 4 wheel drive as well You will enjoy the horse's, should be fun for yea. I took a 302 and C4 out of my 68 2 years ago and put in a mid seventies Lincoln 460 with a C6. It was a pretty easy swap. I got the motor mounts from PAW in their motor mount swap section and used Hedman headers. Had to get the driveshaft shortend which cost about $100 including new u-joints. I used transmission mounts from a Lincoln. The 460/C6 combo has a different belhousing than that on my 302. So I used the one that came with the 460. Used a B$M shifter. I rebuilt the 460 while I was at it. Runs great.
