86 timing proceedure

what is the proceedure for timing a 86 2.9 EEC-IV. I read in the manual about not being able to adjust my distributor. but it dont go into detail

It starts and dies, starts and dies. Good spark to plugs, good fuel pressure

I bought this bronco II from my son in law for cheap. It ran good until other day the ICM went bad , so I replaced it and know does this

This is why I like my pre 80 F-series trucks. you dont have all this electronic crap. 2 plugs, a coil, a battery, a few fuse links & a distributor - also plugs and wires. You are roll'in

Pull the SPOUT connector, hook up your timing light, check timing. Should be 10 deg. BTDC. If it is in any way off, you'll want to loosen the distributor hold-down and adjust. If you can't get it right dead on time, then probably there are worn parts to deal with. You may also want to check your inertia switch. When you replaced the TFI module (ICM), did you put the heat sink grease on the mating surface(s)???

I thought on an 86 2.9 with EEC-IV there was no way to turn (adjust) distributor.

inertia switch bypassed for testing purpose. heat sink grease was put on.

starting it with the SPOUT connector off is when it starts and then dies.

with the SPOUT connector reconnected it will back fire / spit and sputter

Sounds like your timing is off, OR, your spark plug wires are loose and/or out of order. I would also check your firing order and make sure the plug wires are in the right order also. I don't know of any engine with a distributor that you can't loosen it and turn it (or even remove it during a rebuild/replacement). The manuals usually tell you that the timing is pre-set and not adjustable because generally, you shouldn't have to adjust it and the computer will allow for wear and tear and other conditions to 'adjust' the timing and spark curve automatically.

Here is the firing order info on autozone.com:

running good

Ok new cap, new rotor & cleaned the plugs. It started right up.

Timed as such pulled SPOUT connector and started motor it spit and sputtered for about three seconds and it ran good. I put SPOUT connector back on.

However I decided to drive it to work this Morning. Its a 27 miles drive at speeds between 35 - 55 at 42 Degrees out it ran good.

On the way home at 71 Degress it cut out three times on me as if someone cut all power. After about 1 minute it started right back up.

Can anyone explain why?
