I just started my new 292 today but immediatley ran into problems. The seal on the oil filter blew out and started spewing oil all over. I am using the oil filter adapter for Y blocks. Does anyone have this adapter and if so, what filter are you using. Either I am using the wrong filter or something is wrong with my motor and I'm getting to much oil pressure......Thanks......
I had the same experience soon after firing up my new 292 several years ago. Go to www.y-blocksforever.com , click on tech articles, and then Articles by the late Walt Knuckles. It explains briefly how to reform your adaptor so more pressure is exerted upon the gasket. I used a housing, socket and hammer just like the picture shows. After each hammer blow everything went flying and had to be repositioned for another whack, but it ended up sealing in the end. The other option is to buy a new or used adaptor, but a used one could have the same problem.
I had an oil leak like that but only on start up, Walt was still alive then and had directed me to that article, did just as the article said that was at least 5 years ago and still runs fine with no oil leaks.. Gerry
Forgot to mention that I had a hard time finding a new gasket to go behind that adaptor, I ended up buying the cheapest "canister" oil filter for a Y , (it came with a new gasket also) from Kragen auto parts and threw away the filter and kept just the gasket. Gerry
Dont some of the "Complete" gasket sets have that gasket?
When I did my reforming, I didnt want to ruin the big socket so I placed a steel plate on top of the socket. That was why everything went flying with each hammer hit.
Figured out the problem, the pressure relief spring that came with the new oil pump was way to strong, which didn't allow the valve to open and created extremly high oil pressure. I changed the spring and now everything works just fine.
