So I just got back from the ford dealer here in Miami inquiring about some tranny fluid (I was working next door). My tranny lines got a slow leak so it was low and I needed some. He came back with Mercon V and asked him twice if this was compatible with the our infamous E4OD....and twice he was adamant that it was. He even called the guy in the shop at the dealership and he said Mercon V.....says that Motorcraft Mercon V is good all the way.
Ok, that's all good but I know I've read here to stay away from Mercon V. My tranny was just rebuilt and i need to know I'm putting in the right fluid. Incidentally, I called my tranny guy and he too says it's ok.
I did a search and everyone seems to agree on Dexron III/Mercon.
The last I heard the FORD letter said to use Mercon V in all years of the AODE some times called a 4R70W but all others with to use Dexron III/Mercon or the clutches would have a shorter life and would slip under load.
Mercon V has a slip additive in it to allow for more slippage of the lock-up clutches in the torque converter so the AODE some times called a 4R70W will not give a shutter feeling at about 35 to 45 MPH.
I do not know what happens to the other clutches in the AODE.
In short I think you are still supposed to use Dexron III/Mercon in a E4OD.
Thanks for the info. It seems some "experts" in the industry have their own opinions about which fluid to use, but I think I'll go with you guys. Better to err on the side of caution. After all, I'd hate to dish out $1600 again for another rebuild.
Tell you what, I run a CAT excavator at the job, and at times I have my disagreements with the CAT dealer down here about certain things. Dealerships, it seems, don't always have all the answers and this proves it.....but that's another thread. Thanks again.
