Original engine?

I want to check to see if I have the original engine in my truck. There is a sticker on the valve cover with some data on it. How do I cross reference this info with my VIN?

The valve cover should have the engine code, engine number, and build date. I got that far with my teardown manual and I'll try to explain it. It may be cross referenced by the VIN and door jamb sticker. In the VIN the 8th digit from the left is the engine code and the 10th from the left is the model year code. Engine code is as follows (2=4.2, W=4.6 Romeo, 6=4.6 Windsor, L=5.4) Year, I see you have a 97 and 99 trucks (97=V, 99=X). In the door jamb you can cross reference the date to the block. Hope this helps.
