transmission help

2000 F-150 5.4L V-8 4X4.....I lost second and 3rd gear (according to dealer), truck slips into what feels like neutral at 2,000 RPM then when I slow down it clicks back into gear. I'm told I need "basic" rebuild @ around $1800.

Does anyone know of this problem? DOes this sound reasonable without spending 100 repeatedly getting new diagnostics and opinions?

Would you rebuild or go new? What source might you seek to solve this?

Thank you for help.

f-150 transmission

thank you for reply. I don't smell fluid burning and I would have to say/guess it does so cold because I don't drive it long enough to see what happens beyond what it doing now. One thing though, it occurs to me that for some time it felt like the engine would come out of gear for a second when driving around town, then it would go away. So then, I guess it occurs hot too but now its so dramatic it is not drivable.

Does that help?

i would hate to suggest just replacing the 2-3 accumulator and it be somthing else.usually if the fluid is burnt then the clutches are wasted.if not then it is probably something simple.i would hate to see you spend 1000-2000$ on a repair that could be fixed for 150$ in parts and 3 hours of labor to replace it.kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place.
