New 400 Piston, Need Feed-back

I am considering another piston, basically to replace the badger. Because of production turn around, the Badgers are very hard to supply. So I am considering another custom, but in the $150 range.

Options:

1) Flat top, 9.5:1 W/76cc heads. .080" deck height, 1.640" Comp Height (just like the badger)

2) Small dish, 9.5:1 W/76cc heads. "Zero" deck height, 1.720" Comp Height

3) ????? What do you think?

I am liking #2

#2 all the way. That 0.080" in the hole is a problem for most applications.

That will allow quench with closed chamber heads and higher CR, like 10.6:1.

Depends which closed chamber you're talking about. A 63cc (351C 4V), I get 10.8, 60cc (Edelbrocks, AFD, etc) is 11.2, and with 58cc (302C) I got almost 11.5:1.

If you can cut the dish a little deeper to create custom ratios it sounds like a better option for aluminum heads. Otherwise I think you're looking at around 9.3:1 with the other pistons.

Sorry, for $150 it will be a cast piston. I am thinking for the stock 400 head.

A zero deck hyper piston with a disk with enuf meat to vary the dish would be nice. I have no interest in aluminum heads but something to use with closed chamber iron heads would be good to get 9.5:1.

Remember one of the reasons the FT badgers were about 0.010 shorter than stock 71 pistons was a machining allowance for decking the block and heads.

Cast would work fairly well also.

# 2 looks good. I agree with danlee, .080 below deck really bites. Cast would be good but hyper's would be better! TMI, why not Hyper? What would be the cost difference?

We already have a hyper for the Aussie heads. They cost $295 a set.

About %90 of the pistons we sell are the cast Badger. I don't forsee a large amount of those wanting to spend twice the money. That's why I am looking for an ecnomical alternative.

Now I can possible see the next piston being a 1.720" hyper that will give 9.5:1 with the stock head.

But I have to slow down, I have about $15,000 of pistons on the shelf.

New development

How's this sound?

This is based off of a "claimer" hyper. piston.

1.710" comp height, press fit .975" pin, small dish(12cc) to give 9.5:1 with 76cc heads, and hyper. piston.

Maybe about $175 a set.

This is almost exact like the Hyper Badger (in idea) we started with, but it has the dish already in it.

The claimer series has less machining done to them, otherwise same material.

Deal or No Deal??

That's sounds good. $175.00 a set. About $22.00 bucks each. That's still economically priced IMO. Plus your getting Hyper's.

I think that piston works well for stock open chamber heads on gasoline, and for closed chamber heads on E85.

I think that Bill Beyer once posted a link to a graph of Octane rating vs dynamic compression ratio. If I could find that graph, I could determine the maximum DCR for E85, and the static compression ratio to achieve this with a moderate cam.

Yes this piston will work with the stock 400 heads. Friday KB Pistons contacted me and is finished withthe drawings, they will be sent to me and I just have to sign off on them. Then it will be a typical 4-6 weeks.
