I have a 71 f100 w/a 390. my problem is that when im driving my truck it will sometimes start to cutout all the sudden. I have noticed it will usually happen around 3000 rpm in second gear then if i shift into 3rd it will stop for a couple of seconds but then it will start again untill it gets so bad that i can't go faster than 20 mph. I have no idea as to what is causing this. Has anybody else had this happen to them. what is making it do it only sometimes? Any help is appreciated.

My truck was just doing the same thing. I thought it was the vaccuum advance. I couldnt get it off, so I just replaced the distributor with a spare I had. Problem solved.

All,
Coils will fail with temperature. The usually fail because:
1. Someone overtightened their bracket and crushed them.
2. Someone left the bracket loose and vibration wore a hole in it.
Points give up when they rev too high. The worse they are adjusted the sooner they fail.
Intermittent failure of the ignition system not related to temperature is one of two things.
1. Stator pickup in distributor
2. Condenser in distributor
This is a general statement and not always accurate.
Good luck, Have Fun,
