I have recently bought a pre-79 460 and I want some serious pullin power. P.A.W. book has a short block kit that has a 4.500" stroke with 6.800" long rods. But I can't find a kit anywhere that has a stroker kit for a 460 with these dimentions, can anyone help me with a place to look for a crank with this big of a stroke? I have a motor all ready I just want to stroke it out, I definitly want a pullin power house and thought this would be a good way to go. Its going in a 73 F-250 4x4 and I would like the engine to rev to 5500 RPM, does that sound like too much to ask. This will be the engine the truck will have until I have enough money to put a 3116 Cat with a six speedin it. Can anyone help with a stroker crank?
What kind of power increase over a stock 460 would a 4.500" stroke crank provide a 460 engine and would it rev extemely slow, and if so how would I lighten up the rotating assemble? A good machine shop?
Don't worry about lightening the rotating assembly. A 4.5" stroke crank will give you displacement numbers in the mid 500's (depending on bore size). With that kind of displacement your power numbers will be more than adequate.
The other thing is a 4.5" stroke crank is only a couple pounds heavier than a stock crank, and almost always the pistons will be lighter, rods tend to be a wash so it balances out. And trust me a longer stroke isn't going to rev slower, mine is a 4.3" stroke and it can hit 7000rpms before you can let your foot off the throttle.
A stroker crank is not always heavier. my mopar 4" stroke crank was 3lbs lighter than the 3.58 crank i replaced. The stroker crank was drilled where the stock one was not.
stroker pistons are always lighter, shorter skirts, better/lighter materials forged vs cast. some pistons use the smaller diameter wrist pins.
get it all balanced and don't buy more connecting rod than you need, they get heavy. There is a wide variation of styles and associated weights. Get what you need for your hp and rpm needs.
A 460 with the 4.500" stroked crank work well in a 4x4 or a tow rig? does anyone know of a site that has a this big of a stroker kit or does it need to be custom made, and would it be worth the work I just want a powerful motor.
