running lights/park lights stay on

I have an 01 diesel excursion and last night I came home and when I turned the headlights off the park lights/running lights stayed on. When I turned the switch to park lights on, they got a little brighter? After an hour or so, the lights then went off. Any help out there?

Do you have a keyless entry? I know there is a relay somewhere for the parklights in the gem module to flash when you lock the doors. I willing the bet the problem is there. Either that or the headlight switch is burnt out and still making contact. You could remove the switch entirely and then see if they stay on. But as you stated they go a little brighter when turned on, so I think the problem is with the keyless entry side of things.

Where is the gem module you mentioned? The odd thing is after I posted my message, I went out to my EX to disconnect the battery and the lights where off. I turned the headlights on and off and they didn't stay on. Weird. I haven't drivin it withthe headlights on to see if it would do it again.

The GEM module is a big black box with three plugs coming out of it. It's mounted under the dash, just to the left of the brake pedal arm.

The GEM module turns on a "park lamp relay" which is located in a "relay box" in the center of the instrument panel. If you could find this relay, you could pull it and see if the lights went out.

04 F350 4x4 SRW PSD. I have this same issue now. I had a 5th wheel hitch installed today and they also put a bed wall socket in. It's been over an hour and they are still on. I unplugged the trailer to lessen the load. I also noticed the computer display (temp/MPG) is also dark. When I turn the lights Off, it the dinger starts to nag. When I turn the lights to Auto, no nag but they still stay on. Looks like I need to find and pull that relay and then take it back because they shorted something?

I do not think you need to mess with the same relay. Where did they tie in at? They should have tied into the trailer tow circuits. That does have a relay.

Look in the fuse box under the dash. You should have a "trailer tow relay parking lamp" and a "trailer tow relay reversing lamp" relays. Pull the trailer parking lamp relay and see if they go out. I bet they don't because they have messed up somewhere. You may end up disconnecting the battery.

Franklin2 - Thanks man. I disconnected the line to the truck and then I thought of the fuses and pulled a few, but the TT relay parking lamp did the trick. They are out. Back to the dealer service tomorrow, if they're working Saturday. I hope. I'm not sure where they tied in. I just have a big socket in the wall of the truck bed now. This is my first 5th wheel.

The RV center said they used the exact same wires as the factory installed hitch plug and that it was a Ford issue. Turns out the RV service center created a short when they installed the bed plug and this caused a short in the a controller module. Ford said they would fix it under warranty and that this module was quite expensive. It's been in the shop since Monday and they still can't get the replacement module.

Thumbs down

Just got an update from Ford. They have no clue. They replaced the module and no change. They've been on with the tech hotline - all day. They can reproduce the problem - all day. They have no idea what's causing the lights to stay on and have no idea when I can have my "one week old truck to me" back. <long sigh=""> My dream truck doesn't love me. <sniff></sniff></long>

Yeee-ha! Success! When the RV dealer was putting on the hitch they drilled a hole through the Tow Trailer relay which is near the wheel well where they installed the bed plug. The hole was apparently small enough that it was near impossible to see until they removed the relay and looked at it closely. The drill shorted two small wires inside the relay so it was only partly bad which caused all the grief trying to find the problem. I have to say a big thank you to the tech at Phil Long Ford here in CO because he would not give in. He said he'd find it and he did. The cost to the RV dealer: $880 for the relay, controller module, other parts and labor. We're still going camping this weekend!

Pull their fuse and see if they stay on. That will determine if it's a switch problem or a wiring problem.

If you pull their fuse and they stay on, then start pulling other fuses till they go out, and that will be the circuit with the damaged wiring.
