Questions about DP chips and longevity/reliability

Hola all.
I am looking for comments from those who have been running one of DP's flip chips for any length of time. I'd like to know if they have noticed or had any issues or probs after running the chip or tune for long periods, say a year or more. I'd like to get one once I get the guages in and make up my mind on an exhaust, but I want to be sure it won't hurt my expensive motor because I can't afford a rebuild or replacement. I've done a lot of reading and almost all has been positive as far as the Dp chip is concerned. I'm most concerned about reliability over the long haul. I've got 112000 on the clock now and I love my truck and plan to hang onto it for another couple of hundred thousand miles as my daily driver.

I don't race or drag and really just want a little extra power to play with now and then. I was thinking a flip chip with stock, high idle, and either 40 or 60 tow and then the 80 econo and maybe the 120 race which I'd probably only use once in a while. I figure I'll put it on 80 and leave it for the most part.

Comments and opinions welcome.

Thanks
Chris

Any time you add a chip or tuner, you are taking the chance of doing some damage. The higher up in HP you go the better chance of damage. I am not saying you will have any problems, because most people don't. But you do increase the chances for something to break. Of course it also depends on the driver too. You have to know when to take it easy and not abuse your truck. Because once you feel the power of the 120 hp setting you'll be romping on the throttle all day long and burn tires every chance you get.

As for DP-tuner, I believe there are one of the best tuners out there. I haven't heard of many problems from people using these chips. If you are worried about reliability I would not get anything over the 80 hp. That way you won't be tempted to abuse your truck. Good Luck

01f350 is correct. I have been concerned about the same thing - not about DP chips in particular, but about all chips/tuners in general.

Your best protection is to put in a good set of gauges and keep a close eye and protect your engine.

If someone don't want to do that, they need to just leave it stock.

Thanks for the replies guys. I know what you are saying and that's what I have been thinking. I always figured I'd chip it and was doing research and had decided on DP before I even bought the truck. I guess now I am getting cold feet. LOL

I drive it like a truck, not a vette. I bought it becasue I needed another truck so as much as I'd love 500 horses and a million pounds of tourque tearing up the pavement I can't afford to play that game. It would be nice to have a little more under the pedal when I wanted or needed it though.

I suppose I already had my answer in that it depends how you drive it. That's gonna take some control on my part.

I probably will end up getting a chip if only to satisfy my curiousity. i have some time though as I have a couple mods to do before I'm ready.

Thanks again
Chris-

The downside is, once you plug that chip in you start getting the fever.........

Oh I've got the fever for the flavor already. I am trying like hell to balance that with all my other fevers. I'm happily single so luckily I only have to convince my wallet but lately it's been non receptive to spending copious amounts of moola. My brain is saying "hey man, you gotta sell one of your other toys if you want some play money", while my credit cards are screaming "use me, use me!" I must be strong. Must not succumb to the dark side.

You know what I've been looking at more and more though?......Big nasty chrome stacks. Uhg, I'm done for.
Wonder how they'd look poking up through my cap.

Terrapin you might consider getting a 40HP reflash on your PCM from DP tuner. That way you will have the best of both worlds. A truck that runs like it really should and no way for you to "turn it up".

Chris-
big nasty chrome stacks will not add any power so to speak of, but the sound increase is worth several horsepower. however you will get lots of race opportunities, so i would add some power first.

Yeah. I've always thought that was a good idea. Plus, you can get the nice tranny tuning that Jody does - which is worth the price of the flash even if you didn't get any extra power!

My brother has been talking about setting up his X with all inexpensive mods (Kwik intake, Walker BTM, etc), including a 40hp flash. Then changed his mind. He's now planning to get a flip chip because he 'doesn't want his wife driving the X with more power than stock - because she would use it.' He decided he wants the flip chip, not to turn it up, but to be able to turn it down!

I really like my 60hp dp flash. Inexpensive and simple 281 hp on the dyno with a stock tranny for me and that is plenty of power for me to play with. The great thing is how the go pedal is really not anymore touchy than stock until you want to use it. Very good for a daily driver.
