I am looking at flushing my cooling system this weekend and replace my coolant. Can anyone please recommend the best coolant to buy with the proper SCA's amd where is the best place to purchase. I don't have a IH dealership near!
Go to your local O'reillys or ... get the low silicate with sca,s, then distilled water, mix as per instructions. Run, let cool down and test your ph and nitrite levels.
I'm going to be replacing my coolant soon and when I saw this thread, I was thinking "Great! I can get some good info!"
Not so.
Sorry guys, I have to say this: You're making the assumption that the OP knows as much as you.
Bilder12: what is the "newer stuff"? Can you tell by looking at the bottles on the shelf. Not to be offensive, but you didn't really give an answer that was useful. No Brand name or type in your reply. Just a reference to this "newer stuff".... ummmm... sorry, but I have no idea what that is....
i just bought my first diesel a month ago, and I come to this site to get information to help me out - and I GREATLY appreciate the help everyone gives...
but PLEASE, everyone, can we be more specific? you might as well take your truck to a mechanic and say "It don't sound fix. Can you fix it?"
Sorry if I sound pissy, I don't mean to, nor do I intend to insult. but the OP asked for recommendations, and I'm very curious about the options I have. So PLEASE PLEASE give us some details? Thank you very much!!!
any good antifreeze will work . then add the recommended amount of coolant additive like napa-kool from napa, and also get a set of coolant test strips and test the ph and nitrate levels. add coolant additive as needed till levels are correct
There are two SCA groups that most coolants fall under.
Pencool is the first.
DCA4 is the second.
They are not mixable.
Diesel coolant should also be a low silicate formula.
The silicates are added to protect aluminum engine parts which are rare on diesels and the silicates work againt the SCA formulas.
Cat extended life antifreeze is red.
NAPA Fleetpride is purple.
Ford has DCA 4.
Most large diesel engines use one of the SCA technologies.
You should be able to find a supplier close to you that has one or the other.
Which you use makes no difference.
If I give you a brand name from WV, it may or may not be available where you live.
Look at the ASTM ratings on the back of the bottle. ASTM D-3306 is a basic automotive light-duty spec. ASTM-4985 is a heavy duty spec, but it requires the use of SCA's. ASTM D-6210 will be the heavy duty coolants with SCA.
thanks so much for the information on SCAs, ASTM ratings, and everything else! I live in the North Front Range of Colorado and there's lots of horse & cattle farms up here, so finding a farm/tractor supply store won't be too hard.
Again, I never meant to come across as snotty, and hope I didn't. I just REALLY like to know the details about stuff. Yes, I'm kinda ****, I admit it. But I got used to prepping a motorcycle for track duty at 170mph+, and you BETTER be **** about that!!! Plus, I REALLY love my truck already, and want to do the very best in maintenance for it.
Thanks again SO MUCH for all the info from everyone! That's why I come here - because I know diddly!!
