well, on the addition of a pump .. several say they are running in parallel .. meaning, that pre-pump, they "Y" it .. run lines to both .. then post pump back to a "Y" then to the main line ?
FWIW I just added a NAPA 8PSI 72 gal\hr helper pump this weekend, works great. I can dig out the box if anyone needs the part#. Cost was around $75. My F250 had a hole drilled in the frame rail in just the right place (luck), so it barely took 10 minutes to bolt the mount to the frame and wire\plumb the pump.
Many of the earlier Ford MPFI gas engines used a lift pump in the tank and a hi press pump in the frame rail. You could easily adapt one of these to the fuel line in the tank. They attach with hose. I tried to find some specs on the pumps, but was unable to. But, these pumps were designed to do what you asking. I changed out the sending unit/ fuel pump assembly on a '87 Ford Ranger V6 with such a pump. You can buy the pump by itself. It seems like this pump and strainer would work. Or, you could adapt the factory strainer to the bottom of the pump.
Is this the pump you're talking about? Right for the price... Wonder if it would keep up with the hungry diesel? Hard to see from the picture, what where the electrical hookups like?
I have the Carter pump, works great. I'm thinking about putting the pump in the tank like Kwik did but I want to get a new pump first. One question, if I have a tank mounted pump and it fails, would a spare pump put back in the original position be able to suck fuel through the bad in-tank pump? My only concern would be to have a pump fail on the road and not be able to change it. Thanks, Steve.
