High Mount Brake Light

What are some possible sources for the failure of the High Mount Brake Light? The dealer wants to replace the light and ballast at a price of $370. I checked the fuse and it was fine. How do you get to the light take it apart?

I assume you have a '95 to '97 which uses a ballast and neon light assembly. Generally, the ballast goes before the light assembly so you don't have to replace both. You can't take the light apart. It's a sealed unit. Others have bypassed the ballast, gutted the light assembly and replaced with LEDs. You might want to do a search on this forum for more info. This has been discussed a number of times.

I have also read here that the replacement ballast can also be bought (not sure where) for about 80 bucks.

That's about what I paid at the dealer but that was a number of years ago. It's simple to replace. Pull off the top of the rear hatch interior panel. Remove the two nuts holding the ballast. Unplug the electrical connections. Replacement is the reverse of removal. Should take 30 minutes, tops.

I took out the ballast today, tested the wiring up to the ballast had 11.8V. If I test the ballast what kind of output should I see?

I don't have access to my shop manual so I can not tell you what you should expect to see... however be careful at the output. I would guess that you a couple hundred volts for a neon to light but I am not sure.
