i've been reading a lot on this site about the new 6.4 and as it stands right now, i don't want to take a chance on it's first year out. my truck needs to be replaced soon, this year, and i'm thinking of ordering an 07, 6.0L. supposedly, they have made some improvements to this motor, and this will be a short MY from what my saleman has told me. no changes to the body for 07.
who out there has an 06 6.0L and can you tell me any issues you have.
the local ford dealer's diesel mechanics have told me that they hate this motor and that no matter what year you have, it's just not a great motor.
is it worth it to take a chance on the 07 6.0 or will I be regretting it?
i currently have a 97, 7.3 liter but for business reasons, it needs to be replaced. plus, the util body is a rust bucket underneath and is about to fall off the truck. not worth spending 6000k for a new util body on this older truck.
let me know your real opinions of going with this motor or not.
Until technology catches up, your diesel mechanics are not going to be happy people. Friend of mine wrenches for Chrysler and he isn't happy. EPA & Clean air is what it is all about. The 6.4 will be better because Ford is suppose to have technicians up to speed on the release, unlike the 6.0 which left allot of bad feelings between FMC and your mechanics.
My experience and everyone I personally know with a 6.0 (over 20 people...mostly in the trades) has had a great ride. My cousin just traded a totally excellent '03 6.0 dually for a new '06. Didn't bat an eye and already has over 3,000 miles on her.
But, as you have already read. Some have been horrendous. Some issues may have been self induced. But, others is just pure bad luck. In addition, Ford didn't endear themselves to many of the unlucky folks with their customer service policies.

When you lift the hood and look in there one thing screams out at you. No room. That may have something to do with the mechanics not liking to work on them. I don't know. I faced the same decision as you 6 weeks ago and bought a 2006 6.0 No regrets whatsoever. I love the truck. I only personnally know two others with one. Both 2003 models. One has 40k plus the other 100k plus. Both love them. No issues except egr valve on the one with 100k. I say if you need and want and can afford a new one, go for it. Nobody will know how good the 6.4 is for at least a couple years from now.
I have had an 03 and an 04 both with 6.0L. I have had an 06 6.0 with a manual trans for about a month now. It has nearly 3000 miles on it. I have taken it on a long trip(1800 miles) and towed the boat to the lake with the camper on the truck and I couldn't be happier. Fuel economy is better than the previous trucks. Power is better and seems to be put together better. I had an oil leak at 1000 miles that turned out to be the intercooler. I also love the 6 speed rather than the automatic. My complaint with the auto was it was always shifting out of overdrive when using cruise control. You never have to shift down this truck unless you have the camper on it. Hope this helps.

Also remember that the NEW 07's HAVE to use the ULSD fuel which will be hard to find for awhile. I've heard that if you use the wrong fuel you'll damage the engine on the 07's. This was from the EPA site.
I have a '05 PSD with 29K on it and never had a real problem. I woudn't hesitate to buy another one. There are pro's and con's to both. The same will be true with the '07 6.4. Some will have problems and some will not.
I have an 06 with 13,500 miles and not a single problem. Been on three 1000 mile round trip junkets with no problems. Would buy another in a heart beat.

I'm pretty sure the ULSD wil be free flowing before the 07's come out. I would be a BAD problem to have two grades of diesel at the pumps, especially when one is replacing the other.
I thought the EPA changed the deadline until 08. the dealer told me that no changed to the engine or body style are being made for the 07s and that it's just a short MY. the 08s will be in early 07, and they'll have all the changes.
i don't think they'll have ULSD out by the time the 07s are rolling out. he said they are strictly making diesels only on the truck line for the month of june/july. so i could have a truck in a month.
I drove away with my 06' F-350, PSD, on 1/6/06,,will have over 7,000 miles on it today,,the engine has been great, last tankfull netted me 15.6 mpg, (keeps getting better),,mixed driving,,I give it a shot of Diesel Kleen about every tank.
I bought mine in October 2006, F-250 CC 4X4 6.0PSD Automatic, and it's been great. It now has 15,000+ miles and getting 17.3MPG with NO mods yet. I drive a lot on the highway too so that helps. This has been my FIRST Ford and had one heck of a time making a decision as to which of the big three I was going to buy. The cooled EGR seems to be a headache on some trucks, but then again, the new 6.7L Cummins also has a cooled EGR. I think most problems with this truck, and any other vehicle for that matter, are caused by how far you modify them with aftermarket performance mods. Driving a truck and using it as a truck is way dirrerent than using a truck for light to light racing. Anyway, I'm a GM man, but so far this FORD has been very good to me. Now, if I can only get those pessty 18 wheelers to maintain proper mud flaps, then maybe I won't need to change my windshield after six months!!!!

Amen to that! We were in Colorado over spring break and driving on I70 toward Dillon when it sounded like a shot went off. We looked around a bit but couldn't see what it was. A day couple days later I was washing the windshield and I found it. A rock hit the windshield at the extreme lower right corner. It musta been a big one and if it hit square in the middle, no doubt it woulda taken the windshield out! Glad it didn't hit the paint, with only 5000 miles on it!
As far as the '07's and ULSD, they had better coordinate so the fuel is out and flowing freely before they intro the '07 compliant engines or there'll be BIG problems.
A friend of mine just bought an '07 Avalanche (I know, I know, but, he's still a good friend). On day 2 of ownership he was heading for a little gambling trip and an insurgent rock attacked his wind shield. He is got his new installed yesterday.
Same thing happened with his F-350 after 2 weeks of ownership.
