I have a 72 F100 with column shift 3 spd. The 302 has a small hole (1/2") in the block but still runs. I am thinking of a FRPP 351 2bbl as a replacement. I was wondering if anyone has one of these engines, (the 4bbl is the exact same less the med rise maniford,) and if so, does it have good torque. I think they come with a dino sheet, but not sure. Torque is very important with a 3 spd. I will use the 302 carb until restoration teardown and rebuild, but it will be EFI when it rolls out afterwords.
Would a stock EFI setup work well or would I benifit from something like an XFI controller or Holley commander 950 or Edelbrock system? The engine will not see anything above 4850 RPM unless something breaks or the truck is stolen. It will be down for about a year and I will completely rewire the whole truck. Lift off hood, electric fans, new plumbing, everything. Also, would sefi offer really big benefits over cfi, or would the cfi system be on par for a 1200-4850 RPM powerband.
It will see use about three days out of every month or so. No towing, no big loads, just cruising around to see the family and get groceries while in town.
A throttle body system would probably be the best way to go for that, just to make it more driveable. Plus, you could hide that system under a factory air cleaner for a nice stock appearance.
Thanks _Six, since I dont have a donor vehicle, would I be better off getting an old CFI equipted vehicle, build a system from scratch (new parts-Ford, Auto Zone, Napa, ect.), or buy a system like Holley"s Commander 650? I know Ford's system bolts on a standard 2bbl manifold, and all the aftermarket stuff bolts on a 4bbl, I can get the 4bbl engine, I have a 2bbl manifold to use until the rebuild.
I would use a Megasquirt system with a DSII ignition, with a GM throttle body just for the support available for that. A few companies make adaptors to put the TB on a 4BBL intake.
Holley has one, Summit part number HLY-17-45,
