I've developed a stall with my '79 351M ever since I replaced my carb with a newer version of the 2150 (p/o had a 2150 from a '77 truck). I rebuilt the newer carb and made the correct bench adjustments. It fired up and after backing the idle mixture screw off 4 rounds, it idled great. Now, once the engine reaches normal op. temp, it occasionally stalls, especially when I let off of the accelerator to coast to a stop light, sign, etc...I've even heard it dieseling slightly when it stalls. After stalling, I can pump it twice and make it crank. However, I've had a very difficult time getting it to start a few times after it stalled. I don't know if this is coincidental with me changing out the carbs, and that I possibly have a completely different problem, or if it is the carb. A couple of questions and then I'll open the floor for answers, suggestions, etc...
1. What is the correct wet float adjustment/measurement?
2. What is the proper timing setting of the engine (no EGR components)?
3. Can the idle mixture screws be causing this problem if they are not set correctly?
4 turns out sounds way too much making it too rich which can cause stalling and hard starting.
Check with the 335 series engine forum for timing questions. -But basically you have distributor adjustments to make when there is no EGR. There are many threads on this subject there. People seem to ask the same question every week.
