Well, I am having a body shop look at some paint defects and was wondering what OEM paint is. Sherwinn 7000 ultra?? What will last as long and look as good? Can I specify where the truck is worked on??
I have no knowlage about the paint, but would think that auto manf's would have their own supply, or contract it out to several companys to insure supplys. As far as you saying where the work is done, it would depend on ford, they are required to fix it, but maybe not where. But they may go along to get along if you ask.
Dave
My 99 Oxford White, was Dupont, which has begun to flake off on the rolled edges of the firewall & drivers side of the hood. The flat surfaces seem to stil be ok.
Rear along the inside 'rail' the left rear bedside, under the hood (which Ford won't address b/c it is under the hood along the fender), and the driver's door jamb. Dealer is willing to work with everything, but the underhood, as Ford doesn't do anything apperance under the hood. They are solvent bubbles. I have a few door jamb areas that looks grainy like there is dirt under the paint, but my 03 had that too...
Roger on the solvent bubbles, mine has that on the underside of the hood.
I forgot, I had what looked like painted over weld splashes on the passengers side lower door, sharp eough to draw bood, when you brushed against it!!!!
Ford paid the the Dealer to repaint the door, they used Dupont & gave me a lifetime warranty in writing on it.
Too danged bad I couldn't find defects on the remainder of the truck!!!!
With a warranty like that, I sure looked plenty hard!!!! LOL
I remeber all the paint and body defects I had in my 99'. Some were even under the hood. I never had to bicker with any of the bodyshop consultants to get any of the work done. I had everything from the "solvent bubbles, weld slag on the rocker areas, looked like someone at the plant took a angle grinder to a welded joint psngr side rear qtr panel (tailgate jamb area). They gave me a choice of rental cars, had the truck for lit'l bit longer than a week and had it polished up jus' like I was taking delivery again.
If you don't find the answer on the thread you might be able to give the guys a call. And have the Paint code on hand.
Contact info below...

Other than that, your dealer should be able to help point out who they use for any pre-delivery body repairs- they should be able to deal with all the warranty details.
IS Ford willing to do anything about nibs in the paint? I imagine not as that is one every car out there....Will call on the #. Thanks for all the help. I honestly am surprised the dealer is even willing to work with me on this, because the truck is a 09/04 built truck. My '92 F-250 manual says Ford will warrant any paint defects for the first year or 12,000 mi.
Dang, sounds like you have a gem of a Dealer, like me.
So we gotta be sure we take good care of them & give em a good shot at us, on our next buy.
I know mine was up font with me on my problems & stood in really good for me with the factory. I think if we are reasonable, they will try to put our problems right & make us satisfied.
Heck we pay big bucks for the warranty when we buy the vehicle, so they should try to put things right, but seeing as how this is a 04 & they're still willing to work paint problems, says a lot about that Dealer wanting your repeat business!!!!
Actually If you want....I can ask... I do need to set up another appt. to have....the other F-150 badging replaced (flaking finish). I figure I should call before gettin back to the states in another week or two. Should be a bit faster.
Or if you do call... your call should be directed to a desk clerk, I'd simply ask for, "someone that can answer questions on factory paint/specs". That is if they arnt bombarded by "waiters" (they handle BMW/Mini warrranty fixes too) they should be able to answer most of all your questions in a professional manner.
If you could ask that would be great... The paint code is UA if I am reading it right. Thanks again...Yeah, I got lucky with this dealer, and will definately be using them for a long time to come unless something really bad happens....but I don't see that... To show how far they go for the customer, with the '03 expedition, I accidently left the parking brake on and drove home from work. I wasn't paying any attention, but got home and realized my brakes were shuddering and grinding really bad. Took it straight to the dealer 5 minutes before they closed. They took it right in, and gave me a brand new taurus as a loaner no questions asked, and it was done the next day at closing.... Too bad all dealers weren't this good....
Your Sherwin Williams (Sherwin 7000), and or PPG is the two names I was told depending on the year and vehicle (most likely the Sherwin). The thing was...this Ford/BWM-Mini Body shop uses Du'pont.
Sherwin Williams even had a paint code search. So after all this...I'd say you've got a couple of choices.
Well I finally got around to the dealer and the shop they use only paints with sikkens products, which is from holland i guess. Anybody know how they are?? The rep told me it is a high quality line...never heard of them....
The shop says they are base clear, but all i can find is house coatings or lacquer...So i assume that a shop using sikkens obviously knows what they are doing, and is better than sherwinn??
