-cat has been glowing red several times, too much fuel in mixture, right?
-ford shop 1st said i needed new plugs and wires and injector cleaning-i changed plugs and wires, nil on improve
-just put on o2 sensor,nil
-second trip to ford (on their nickel) they said i need new PCM...maybe yes/no..wont bad sensor elsewhere just screw it up again??
-Handleman thinks maybe new dis pack needed(ignition control module)..leaning that way, but 200 bucks
-cleaned trottle body intake etc
-changed relays in engine bay fuse box

What DTC(s) is it showing? Has anyone checked the fuel pressure regulator, in particular the inside of the vacuum line leading to it for the presence of gas? Is it safe to assume that the air filter is in good condition?

*How did the Ford dealer arrive that the conclusion that a new ECM is needed?

Indeed, where'd they get that idea?

Have the codes pulled. It'll be a slow drive to your local AutoZone or the like, but get up to a parts store and have the codes pulled, that will lead us in the right direction and you can buy parts that will help as opposed to just random ones.

thanks for responding cowboybilly and rangerpilot
went back to ford after work today and got hardcopy of what the tech found on my ranger...

'caused by SELF TEST SYSTEM. retrieved dtc 222 idm low,rh coil. perform pinpoint test b. normal plugs kb from both coils.
install breakout box and harness adaptor. measured voltages.
pinpoint test detects failure in PCM. disconnect and removed all test equipment for diag.'

Cowboy, gonna check fuel pressure regulator like you suggested hopefully tomorrow night....buddy also has gauges to check pressure at fuel pressure test port on fuel rail.
Sure wish 'Overhauling' would show up and rebuilt my vehicles, hahhh!
thanks for the help ..........

Have a full diagnostics test performed at a Ford dealer or certified auto mechanic.Troubleshooting these days can be expensive when you end up replacing things that do not need replacing.

well checked fuel pressure regulator...had constant pressure in correct range...checked current coil packs, ok...now thinking it is dis pack (ignition control module)...guess that is next step...also read sites where the code 222 was the ignition pack....
